The Bettermaker Stereo Passive Equalizer is a stereo Pultec-style EQ based on the original passive EQ combining a 100% analogue signal path with mastering-grade sound quality with the flexibility and precision of digital controls via a plugin.
The Bettermaker Stereo Passive Equalizer has adapted the circuit of the Pultec section of its original EQ232 mkII as a 2U standalone unit with additional features.
Analogue Audio Path
The Pultec-style EQ utilizes passive filters and solid-state amplification, originally derived from the acclaimed EQ232 mkII circuitry. It comprises two distinct bands, Low and High, each equipped with its own set of controls for boosting and cutting, faithfully reproducing the iconic "Pultec" sonic signature.
In the Low band, dedicated boost and cut controls share frequency adjustment knobs, resulting in a resonant shelf curve that delivers a substantial yet controlled low-end presence. On the other hand, the High band offers separate controls and frequency selection points for boosting and cutting. The HF boost section offers a choice of ten frequency points, including two newly introduced "Air" bands at 20kHz and 28kHz. Meanwhile, the Hi-Cut section provides the traditional 5kHz, 10kHz, and 20kHz frequency options. The combined action of the HF Boost and HF Cut produces an expansive, ethereal sound that remains pleasing to the ear without any harshness.
Digital Controls
The Stereo Passive Equaliser features the patented digital control system across Bettermaker's product range, enabling seamless integration within your session. This allows for real-time EQ adjustments through your chosen plugin, facilitating convenient setting storage and automation in your sessions.
At its core, this equalizer is driven by a high-speed 32-bit microcontroller equipped with dedicated firmware. The USB connection establishes communication between the plugin (AAX, AU, VST) and the unit, offering firmware upgrade capabilities. Additionally, the microcontroller oversees the user interface, preset management, measurements, and other essential functions.
