Mastering version of the acclaimed SOC20 Class A optical compressor with an MS Matrix, adjusted ratios and stepped controls.

The Buzz Audio SOC-M is a mastering version of the acclaimed SOC20 Class A optical compressor with an MS Matrix, adjusted ratios and stepped controls.

The Buzz Audio SOC-M is based around Buzz’s Class-A discrete BE41 transistor amplifiers which are powered by a unique low-impedance power supply for vibrant sonic detail. A Lundahl LL1517 output transformer is employed to add a nice sheen to the overall sound.

The SOC-M includes a Mid/Side encoder and decoder allowing you to compress the mono and stereo signals differently. The MS signal is then decoded back to stereo on the main outputs but they remain available separately via the insert XLR outputs.

A 170Hz, 12dB/oct sidechain high-pass filter can be engaged to reduce the compressor’s sensitivity to low frequencies to retain more bass punch. Furthermore, Sidechain insert points are provided to add further equalisation if required. A side-chain monitor switch lets you hear the insert return point and in MS Mode lets you hear the Mid or Side signals.

The five ratio points have been lowered to match the requirements of mastering application. they all feature a soft-knee curve where the selected ratio is only actually achieved at 10dB of gain reduction. As a result, it is possible to achieve very gentle compression even at 10:1. Attack and release time work by splitting the incoming signal into side-chain positive and negative waveforms to be processed separately. The balance between the two signals are then fed to the BE45 electro-optical attenuator. Auto-attack and -release modes offer very musical results by adapting their characteristics to the incoming signal.
