Legendary Tone and Flexibility
The P.LANE Type 436 meticulously preserves the iconic tonal character of the historic ALTEC 436C while incorporating modern features like stepped controls and enhanced connectivity options.
The Lang P.LANE Type 436 is a dual-rack unit, all-tube vari-mu compressor built around a NOS 6H5P, a JJ E88CC, and a NOS 6AL5 tube, featuring stepped attack and recovery controls, transformer-balanced XLR/TRS inputs and outputs, and a SuperFast setting for modern transient control.
Lang Electronics Inc. and Heritage Audio have recreated one of the most revered and elusive tube compressors of the last century—the modified ALTEC 436C, known for shaping the British Invasion sound. The P.LANE Type 436 enhances this historical circuit by preserving the original’s tonal character while expanding its flexibility with stepped controls and modern connectivity.
This vari-mu compressor uses a fully discrete all-tube signal path with three high-quality valves (1 x NOS 6H5P, 1 x JJ E88CC, 1 x NOS 6AL5). Its custom input and output transformers, wound to Heritage Audio’s specifications, deliver the saturated warmth expected from vintage tube gear. With six stepped attack and six recovery time settings—plus Hold functions for each—engineers can fine-tune dynamic control across a wide range of source material.
The inclusion of the SuperFast recovery mode, absent in original 436C units, equips the P.LANE with the ability to handle modern dynamic material such as aggressive vocals or percussive transients without compromising tonal integrity. The unit’s “London Mod” circuitry retains compression characteristics based on peak level memory, ensuring musical but assertive gain reduction.
Housed in a durable 2U steel chassis with a universal internal power supply, the P.LANE Type 436 is ready for any professional studio environment. Its XLR and TRS I/O offer balanced connectivity via custom transformers, ensuring signal integrity from tracking to mastering.
The P.LANE Type 436 delivers a classic tube compression sound that continues to be a staple across genres—from rock and pop to hip hop and electronic music. Its musical control of transients without dulling high-end detail makes it an ideal choice for tracking and mixing everything from vocals to strings, bass, brass, and beyond.
