Natural Tone Preservation
The Manley Massive Passive uses passive EQ components, which minimize distortion and maintain the natural quality of the audio, allowing for double the EQ with half the coloration compared to conventional designs.
The Manley Massive Passive uses passive components for its equalisation and exploits their natural qualities avoiding the distortion inherent to active circuitry. As a result, the Massive Passive can provide twice the amount of EQ with half the colouration of most designs for a truly natural tone.
Incorporating the strengths of Pultec designs, as well as some choice console EQs parametric and graphics, the Massive Passive is nonetheless a truly different EQ. From subtle enhancements to radical sound-shaping this audio equalizer does it all. For example heavy HF boosts will add a lot of presence to vocals without adding sibilance, and LF will add heft without mud.
Unlike most EQ designs, All four bands of the Massive Passive are not built in series but in parallel. This means that overlapping frequencies do not suffer from the cumulative effect of tweaking each band.
As each band works from the exact same source, the result is much more transparent. Each band can be set to bypass, boost or cut as well as a bell or shelf. Each band is capable of 20dB of boost or cut with impressive headroom. Five extremely steep high-pass and low pass filters are also added to remove unwanted frequencies such as low-end rumble. Both HPF and LPF interact with the main parametric EQ section.
Since the start of 2020 the Massive Passive now includes the new MANLEY POWER Switch-Mode Power Supply.
Designed for Manley by Bruno Putzeys this new power supply provides 300 Volt DC rails to run the valves and 6 Volt lines to power them up providing extra realiabilty and sonic improvements throughout the Massive Passive and other designs.

The Manley Massive Passive uses passive EQ components, which minimize distortion and maintain the natural quality of the audio, allowing for double the EQ with half the coloration compared to conventional designs.
The Massive Passive provides unparalleled flexibility in sound shaping with four parallel EQ bands that can independently bypass, boost, or cut. This configuration prevents frequency overlap issues and maintains clarity, even with significant adjustments.
Introduced in 2020, the Manley Massive Passive includes the MANLEY POWER Switch-Mode Power Supply, engineered by Bruno Putzeys, providing stable high voltages for improved reliability and sonic quality in the equalizer's performance.
The Massive Passive EQ employs a fully passive, parallel equalisation design inspired by Pultec-style circuitry, utilising hand-wound inductors and premium film capacitors to deliver smooth, natural tonal shaping. Its 44 selectable bands and wide dynamic range let engineers add subtle air or bold character without introducing digital artefacts or unwanted gain.
The shaped signal is driven by dual valve line drivers, imparting warm harmonic richness and smoothness even under heavy EQ settings. Steep passive high-pass and low-pass filters further enable surgical removal of rumble or harshness while keeping the core tonal integrity intact.
Each band features a switchable shelf or bell response, paired with a unique bandwidth control that maintains consistent quality whether boosting or cutting frequencies. This flexible approach allows precise, musical sculpting of the audio spectrum, preserving phase coherence and clarity across the entire range.
