The Pultec EQM-1S3 Matched Pair includes two EQM-1S3 Mastering EQ with reduced boost and cut and stepped controls and carefully matched components for stereo compatibility.
The Pultec EQM-1S3 Matched Pair is a modern adaptation of the rare EQP-1S3 specifically designed for mastering applications by Dr Steve Jackson and using only original-spec components to deliver the same sound of vintage units. As such, it boasts stepped controls throughout with 0.5 dB of cut or boost for each step, allowing for precise setting and easy recalls. The cut and boost for each band has also been reduced to up to 10 dB instead of the 16dB found on the original units.
This modern iteration of the Pultec EQ provides the same sonic signature as the original EQP-1A such as its silky smooth top end and huge and tight bass. However, the EQM-1S3 includes different EQ curves and more frequency points offering small tonal differences and added flexibility.
Using a two-band passive design with separate boost and cut controls the EQM-1S3 is particularly musical and allows you to create a resonant shelf curve, boosting an area while keeping any of the unwanted frequency build-ups under control. Used in mastering, these curves provide a powerful way to add weight to a song without boxiness or increase presence or air without the song ever sounding harsh. The HF band also gives you more frequency points with the first 9 frequencies working as a peak and the last two being shelves. This difference is notable as peaks might often be more preferable than shelves to avoid lifting unwanted frequencies. The different frequency points are:
The EQM-1S3 boasts the same gain makeup architecture as the EQP-1A, with a valve-driven push-pull design placed after the EQ to compensate for the loss of volume associated with passive EQs and keeping an incredibly low noise floor.
