The Soma Pulsar-23 Screw Analogue Drum Machine (Orange) offers the same functionality as the PULSAR Turret but at a lower price, using stainless steel screws instead of costly custom turrets.
The Soma Pulsar-23 revolutionises analogue drum machines with a semi-modular design that can be used immediately without patching. Its extensive interconnectivity offers endless sonic and rhythmic experimentation.
Unique Patching Method
The Pulsar-23 introduces a distinctive patching system using alligator clips and binding posts instead of traditional ⅛” and ¼” cables. This allows multiple cables to connect to the same post and encourages tactile interaction with binding post connections.
Powerful Voicings
The Pulsar-23 features four distinct voices:
-
BD (Bass Drum): This drum module is designed to craft analogue bass drums. It has Pitch and Tune controls and a Drive unit for shaping waveforms.
-
Bass: This comprehensive subtractive mono synth section has waveform selection and a low-pass filter. It is also convertible to a percussion instrument.
-
SD (Snare Drum): This module is tailored for snare drums and claps, with a band-pass filter, clap control, and traditional snare adjustments.
-
HHT (High Hat): This module uses white noise as its primary sound source and a high-pass filter for tonal control.
Each voice includes Attack and Decay parameters with independent modulation binding posts. FX controls allow assignment to DSP Reverb and Delay.
Advanced Sequencer
The Pulsar-23 offers a unique tape loop-inspired sequencing method, allowing high-resolution sound event recording. Each voice features rhythmic quantisation and internal memory for easy recall of sequences.
MIDI Integration and Clocking
The robust MIDI integration allows the assignment of drum parameters to MIDI messages, with the Bass voice controllable via MIDI for keyboard playability. The device supports external clocking through MIDI and an analogue clock, with versatile clock divisions for unique swing patterns and LFO synchronisation.
SHAOS Module
The SHAOS module adds unpredictability with a pseudo-random voltage generator. It offers three modes and selectable sequencer lengths, enhancing the Pulsar-23’s capabilities.
Extensive Utilities
The Pulsar-23 includes numerous utilities in traditional modular systems, such as attenuators, VCA, adapters for seamless modular communication, CV-controllable inverters, gate-controlled switches, and impulse generators.
