The SPL Gemini is a mid/side processor incorporating 120V technology, making it unique. M/S processing is a popular technique in mastering for precise control over individual elements in a mix.
M/S Processing Explained
M/S processing involves splitting the stereo signal into two components: Mid (containing elements like vocals, snare, and bass) and Side (incorporating elements like guitars, pads, and cymbals). This separation allows for independent processing.
The Mid signal is the sum of the left and right channels (L+R), representing the "in-phase" part of the stereo signal. The Side signal is the difference between the left and right channels (L-R), meaning the "out-of-phase" part.
Additionally, the Gemini can adjust stereo width and features an elliptical filter for shifting low-frequency content from Side to Mid.
Control and Processing
The Gemini offers control over both Mid and Side signals. The Balance control adjusts the centre position, and the Trim control sets signal levels. These functions can be engaged only when needed. Solo functionality allows for monitoring the centre signal exclusively, and processors can be inserted for Mid signal processing.
The Side signal also includes Solo functionality and switchable inserts for external processing. The elliptical filter shifts bass frequencies from Side to Mid, enhancing low-end precision. The Stereo Width control adjusts the side signal level.
I/Os and Inserts
The device's inputs, outputs, sends, and returns are balanced using Neutrik XLR connectors. Processors can be connected to inserts for external processing.
The Gemini can be integrated into the Hermes Mastering Router, enabling a combination of L/R and M/S processing.
Hermes Integration
The Gemini's M/S encoder and decoder stages can be linked to the Hermes for flexible processing. Processors between the M/S encoder and decoder handle the mid/side signal. This setup accommodates mono devices and allows for custom processing chains.
120V Technology
The Gemini's standout feature is its 120V technology. This technology operates at a DC voltage of 120 volts, a significant advancement compared to standard semiconductor op-amps. It offers improved dynamic range, signal-to-noise ratio, and headroom, enhancing audio quality.
The Gemini's 120V technology provides a +32.5 dBu input level capacity, offering 12 dB more headroom than lower-voltage devices. This ensures optimal performance and a pleasant listening experience.
