KMR Audio - Supercritical Redshift 6 Variable Character Synthesizer
Six-voice analogue synthesiser featuring up to sixteen oscillators per voice, a digitally controlled four-pole state-variable filter with five distinct character profiles, flexible gain staging with analogue drive, four envelopes, four LFOs, a 32-slot modulation matrix, multitimbral operation with six independent parts, multiple voice modes including polyphonic and paraphonic configurations, USB-B and DIN MIDI connectivity with MPE support, six line-level outputs, a stereo headphone output, a bypassable digital effects section, a built-in arpeggiator and sequencer, and a 2.7-inch TFT IPS colour display with eight endless rotary encoders for hands-on control.

The Supercritical Redshift 6 is a six-voice analogue synthesiser that offers an unparalleled level of tonal flexibility through its Variable Character architecture, combining a fully analogue signal path with precise digital control. Featuring up to sixteen oscillators per voice, a four-pole multimode analogue filter, extensive modulation capabilities, and modern performance features, it delivers a powerful synthesis engine capable of producing everything from vintage-inspired warmth to aggressive, distorted textures.

Oscillators and Sound Generation

Each of the six voices incorporates the Supercritical Demon Core Oscillator, a digitally controlled analogue oscillator with up to sixteen oscillators per voice, allowing for thick, detuned supersaw textures, lush polyphonic pads, and precise monophonic leads. The analogue signal path remains intact while digital control ensures stable tuning and seamless integration with modern production setups. Flexible gain staging and an analogue drive circuit provide additional control over harmonics and saturation, enabling a wide range of tonal possibilities from pristine clarity to aggressive distortion.

Variable Character Filter and Tonal Shaping

At the heart of the Redshift 6’s sound design capabilities is its four-pole state-variable analogue filter, digitally controlled to emulate the response of classic vintage filters while extending beyond their traditional limitations. The filter allows seamless transition between five distinct character profiles—Liquid, Crisp, Fat, Sour, and Mean—each with unique resonance, distortion, and envelope response. Liquid offers a smooth, spacey resonance with rich harmonic content. Crisp delivers a bright, cutting filter response ideal for leads and percussive sounds. Fat provides a thick, ladder-style filtering characteristic with deep bass emphasis. Sour is designed for acid-like squelch and resonance. Mean introduces highly unstable, distorted behaviour for raw and aggressive synthesis. The ability to interpolate between these profiles ensures a virtually limitless range of sonic textures.

Modulation and Sound Design Capabilities

Redshift 6 integrates four envelopes and four LFOs per voice, providing deep modulation control over its oscillators, filters, and amplitude settings. A 32-slot modulation matrix enables complex routing, allowing users to shape their sounds dynamically with ease. Six user-assignable macro controls further enhance real-time sound manipulation, making it possible to craft evolving textures and expressive performances effortlessly. The synth also includes an arpeggiator and sequencer, offering rhythmic and melodic programming options directly within the unit.

Multitimbrality and Voice Modes

Redshift 6 is a multitimbral synthesiser, supporting up to six independent parts. Various voice allocation modes, including six-voice polyphony, dual-layer polyphonic (splitting voices into 3+3 layers), and paraphonic operation, provide flexible performance and sound layering options. Voice chaining extends polyphony further, making it ideal for both standalone synthesis and integration into larger setups.

Connectivity and Modern MIDI Implementation

Designed for both studio and live use, Redshift 6 features six line-level audio outputs via 6.3 mm jacks, along with stereo headphone output. The unit provides two main outputs and four auxiliary outputs, enabling advanced routing configurations. A bypassable digital effects section applies to the main outputs, offering additional sound processing without compromising the analogue signal path. USB-B connectivity and DIN MIDI IN/OUT ensure seamless integration with modern MIDI workflows, while MPE compatibility expands expressive control possibilities.

Hardware and Build Quality

Redshift 6 features a 2.7-inch TFT IPS colour display, providing intuitive visual feedback alongside a bank of eight endless rotary encoders for hands-on parameter control. The unit’s compact and robust design measures 378 mm x 254 mm x 63 mm and weighs 3.5 kg, making it a portable yet powerful synthesis solution. Powered via a 12V supply, it is engineered for reliability and performance. Designed in Finland and manufactured in Germany, the build quality reflects high standards suitable for both professional and demanding creative environments.
