Precision Low-End Sculpting
The Zombie Rec Mammut is designed for detailed shaping and processing of frequencies up to 200Hz, allowing for nuanced sound design and enhanced audio clarity in the low-end spectrum.
The Zombie Rec Mammut is a fully analogue stereo low-end shaping unit designed to process and sculpt frequencies up to 200Hz with high precision, featuring a proprietary compressor/expander, advanced filtering, and plugin-based remote control via Ethernet.
Despite its fully analogue signal path with zero digital conversion, the Mammut offers modern convenience through remote control via a dedicated plugin over Ethernet. This integration allows seamless session recall, preset cycling, and hardware synchronisation across multiple units through the Windows and macOS-compatible Hardware Hub, with plugin formats available in VST3, AU, and AAX.
Zombie Rec developed a unique high-pass filter topology to refine and emphasise low-end clarity. It eliminates sub-frequency rumble while preserving the musical weight of the bass content. The user can choose between 12dB or 18dB per octave slopes, and select from six finely tuned frequency points: 16Hz, 21Hz, 26Hz, 31Hz, 34Hz, and 44Hz.
The integrated low-shelf EQ delivers precise tonal sculpting, with frequency interaction reminiscent of classic tube EQs. Both high and low shelf points can be independently selected from the same six frequency options (26Hz to 106Hz), and their position can be reversed to yield novel response curves. Gain adjustments range from -3dB to +3dB in 0.5dB steps, and the design avoids traditional bell EQ behaviour for more musical results.
A precision crossover separates the processed low-end from the high-frequency spectrum. The low band is routed through the core processor while ensuring a flat frequency response at the crossover point. Settings include 85Hz, 100Hz, 125Hz, and 200Hz, allowing for targeted processing of sub-bass or full low-end body. Listen mode isolates the processed band and generated harmonics, aiding in exact tonal adjustments.
At the heart of the Mammut lies a proprietary compressor/expander circuit. It processes only the selected low-frequency band, applying gain reduction or expansion based on user-defined parameters. Ratio options span from 1.25:1 to 4:1 for compression and 1:1.25 to 1:4 for expansion. Users can independently set attack (from 0.2ms to 30ms) and release times (5ms to 300ms), adjust makeup gain from -6dB to +6dB, and choose between hard and soft knee. The design ensures punch and clarity, even when the low-end level is reduced.
A dedicated saturation module introduces transformer-based odd harmonics and optional even-order harmonics via silicon circuitry. Users can control the saturation level from subtle enhancement to mild distortion. A long press on the On button enables pre-compression saturation routing, which adds further sonic versatility. Even harmonics can be toggled between High and Low intensity, offering tonal characteristics ranging from presence lift to tube-like warmth.
Every element of the Mammut reflects build quality and usability, including custom-designed knobs that improve precision operation. Relay-based hard bypass switches ensure the device can be fully disengaged from the signal path. While naturally stereo, the unit supports dual mono and Mid/Side operation for creative channel interaction.
The accompanying plugin mirrors the physical controls of the Mammut, providing a seamless remote interface without processing audio or introducing latency. Visual feedback from the gain reduction LEDs is synced to the hardware, supporting fast, intuitive control within any DAW environment.
