The Rupert Neve Designs 5211 is a dual-channel mic preamp with a Variable Silk circuit, Class A output stage with custom transformer and new +/-21V power rails.
The Rupert Neve Designs 5211 uses the same Transformer-Like Amplifier balanced mic input of the original portico 5012, designed to capture the sound in its purest form. Each channel provides 72dB of extra low-noise and low-distortion gain via its coarse gain that works in 6dB steps and a continuously variable +/- 6dB trim pot.
It also features sweepable high-pass filters ranging between 20Hz to 250Hz and +48V phantom power, as well as a polarity reverse switch.
The input can also be an extremely high-quality line input with an impedance of 10k Ohms.
The Evolution of a Classic
The Shelford 5211 combines Rupert Neve’s expertise in designing classic mic preamps with modern appointments. This pre can be pristine and modern or the richer sound of classic designs.
This microphone preamp is the natural evolution of the 5012 duo mic preamp. It boasts a redesigned circuit powered with +/21V rails to improve the signal-to-noise ratio, increase headroom and dynamic range.
A custom dual-tap output transformer created for the Shelford Channel Strip offers two outputs. The first set of outputs delivers the full +26dBu headroom, while the second set provides a reduced level of -6dB. The latter is ideal for the classic transformer saturation sound without clipping converters or audio interfaces.
Additional features include an internal auto-switching power supply that provides ample stable power anywhere in the world.
Its distinctive colour provides an unmistakably classic look that instantly reminds us of its legacy.
Variable Silk
The Rupert Neve 5211 mic pre includes an updated version of Rupert Neve’s legendary Silk texture. A new textured pot controls the amount of harmonic content added to recreate the sonic character of vintage modules.
The new variable Silk works by reducing negative feedback while saturating the output transformer and changing the frequency spectrum.
This results in a sweeter and richer sound reminiscent of Rupert Neve’s vintage modules. The effect can be amplified by driving the preamp level to the edge of its headroom.
A Choice Between Vintage and Modern
The Shelford 5211 is extremely versatile. Its fully transformerless input design offers superior microphone signal clarity. It is, however, capable of more extreme saturation by combining its Variable Silk and custom output transformer lower headroom. Its tones range from stunningly delicate and clear sounding to thick and warm.
