The Eventide Omnipressor Model 2830Au is a faithful recreation, marking the golden 50th anniversary of the revered Omnipressor. This iconic compressor, initially introduced by Eventide Clockworks in 1973, revolutionised the world of studio production by pioneering dynamics for special effects. Alongside the Instant Phaser® and Instant Flanger®, it quickly gained popularity in studios worldwide, leaving an indelible mark on countless recordings and earning its place as a true classic.
The Eventide Omnipressor Model 2830*Au was crafted using the original hand-drawn schematics preserved in the Eventide archives. This new model faithfully replicates the circuitry and sound of the original 2830, while the *Au model brings several enhancements to the table, including the ability to link multiple units and the inclusion of input and output audio transformers, initially a costly option. It now features a universal power supply, a back-lit meter for convenience, and upgraded TRS/XLR connectors in place of the original terminal strip.
Unlike its companions, the Omnipressor possessed unique features like dynamic reversal, infinite compression, variable gating, and a separate "side chain." Despite its groundbreaking capabilities, it was discontinued a few years later due to challenges in sourcing exclusive components and explaining its advanced concepts to a less sophisticated industry of the time.
The Omnipressor, initially conceived by Eventide's founder Richard Factor and later perfected for production by Jon Paul, was the world's first dynamics effects processor, opening up a new realm of dynamic effects previously unheard of. It provided variable control over all aspects of dynamic modification. It introduced the concept of the "side chain," foreshadowing techniques that are now taken for granted, such as "look ahead" processing. Notably, one of Eventide's earliest customers for the Omnipressor was Brian May, the lead guitarist of Queen.
In celebrating 50 years of the Omnipressor, Eventide continues its tradition of innovation and dedication to the art of audio processing, keeping the spirit of the iconic compressor alive for generations to come.
