KMR Audio - AudioScape Opto Compressor

Faithful recreation of the legendary LA-2A Opto compressor with handbuilt T4B Opto-cell element, NOS Valves and Custom-wound Cinemag transformers and R37 trim pot.

The AudioScape Opto Comp is a meticulously re-created optical valve compressor that utilises an incandescent light source and optical sensor for smooth, musical dynamic processing, incorporates NOS valves and carbon-composite resistors for authentic 1960s tonality, employs a custom T4B opto-attenuator built in-house for precision and consistency, relies on custom-wound Cinemag transformers for enhanced warmth and headroom, and features a convenient front-panel R37 high-frequency trim control for effortless shaping of the compression range.

A Tribute to a 1960s Classic

Audio engineers valued the original 1960s optical valve compressor for its musical behaviour, smooth gain reduction and pleasing harmonic richness. The modern re-creation revives that beloved design by passing audio through valves and hefty transformers, which infuse tracks with classic warmth and vintage-style character. The incandescent lamp in tandem with the opto cell captures the same fluid compression curve that distinguished the original unit.

Front-Panel R37 Trim Pot for Greater Control

The legendary R37 high-frequency control began life in the 1960s on the back of the unit, factory-adjusted for specific uses, but modern engineers demanded simpler access. The AudioScape design responds by placing the trim pot on the front panel, where turning it counter-clockwise raises resistance and filters out low-frequency energy before it reaches the T4B. This direct control shifts the compressor’s focus towards higher frequencies and offers more versatility for a broad range of recording and mixing scenarios.

Hand-Built T4B Opto-Attenuator

Technicians craft the T4B module in-house and follow vintage traditions, including a carefully matched resistor across the panel, replica EL panels and premium photocells. This attention to detail produces reliable performance and matches the musical compression profile that studios associate with the heritage model. The T4B’s precision ensures the same smooth optical response that shaped countless classic recordings.

Premium Components and Thoughtful Construction

Engineers rely on half-watt carbon composite resistors and top-quality capacitors from Cornell Dubilier, Panasonic and Nichicon, which guarantee consistent frequency response and tonal accuracy. The custom-wound Cinemag transformers and NOS valves maintain the distinct box-tone, while small-batch construction in the USA places strict oversight on every build. Each assembler specialises in two products, which guarantees deep expertise and reliable workmanship in every unit.

Why Invest in an Opto Comp?

Professionals who value an authentic vintage sound gain a trusted studio companion that combines a cherished 1960s design with modern refinements. The commitment to meticulous craftsmanship, premium materials and faithful circuit topology results in a compressor that delivers revered tone and performance in equal measure. This focus on quality and heritage sets the AudioScape Opto Comp apart from other optical compressors, ensuring that each purchase supports a carefully honed manufacturing process and secures a lasting tool for professional audio production.
