Classic Sound, Modern Performance
Experience the rich, musical voicing of the classic Studer 169 console, enhanced with modern specifications for superior sound quality and performance in any studio environment.
The HLabs EQ169DC Sepia Module is a mono, semi-parametric equaliser for the Sepia environment that blends the musical voicing of the classic Studer 169 console with updated specifications including wide-band shelves, an extended presence filter and modern headroom.
The EQ169DC draws directly from the sonic character of the Studer 169, yet it refines the original topology with cleaner power rails at ±16.5 V DC, a higher signal to noise ratio above 105 dB and a frequency response that remains within ±0.5 dB from 5.4 Hz to 25 kHz when driving a 1 kΩ load. It offers a fully mono channel configuration optimised for precise tone shaping in both mixing and tracking contexts.
The high shelf operates at 20 kHz with a broad ±15 dB range, giving engineers the ability to add open, glassy brightness or attenuate excess air without introducing harshness. Its design mirrors the musical behaviour of the original Studer shelf but benefits from the cleaner headroom and stability of the modern circuitry.
The presence filter acts as a semi-parametric band with continuously variable frequency control from 150 Hz to 7 kHz. It offers ±11 dB of gain and a natural Q around 1.0, which allows engineers to shape midrange weight, articulation and clarity without unnatural resonances. This range covers everything from vocal warmth to guitar bite and drum definition, giving broad flexibility while retaining the musical response of the 169’s core design.
The low shelf sits at 20 Hz and also provides ±15 dB of adjustment. It adds depth, authority and roundness or tightens excessive sub-bass energy with smooth, predictable behaviour. Engineers can enhance body without muddying the critical low-mid region, a hallmark of the Studer sound and an area where the updated topology maintains exceptional control.
The EQ169DC handles input and output levels up to +22 dBu, allowing it to integrate easily into modern hybrid workflows. Its combination of wide headroom, strong linearity and a noise floor well below audible thresholds ensures clean processing even at high boost levels. The internal design maintains tonal consistency while resisting unwanted distortion, reinforcing its suitability for professional signal chains.
