Hands-On Sound Design Experience
Encourages tactile interaction and experimentation, allowing users to explore unique sound textures and effects that traditional controllers cannot provide.
The Soundwich by Landscape is a compact passive tactile audio device that captures taps, clicks, shakes and routed signals through dual piezo pickups mounted directly beneath its top and bottom plates, delivering a wide range of percussive, filtered and momentary-switch effects.
Landscape combines the exposed tactility of the original Soundwich concept with refinements that expand its sonic range and performance utility. Two piezo disks sit in direct contact with the enclosure surfaces, so they transmit the sound of eight tactile switches, finger taps and the movement of internal hardware. The unit behaves as a hybrid instrument, controller and audio processor that operates without power. Each 3.5 mm connector functions as either an input or an output. One remains always active and carries the complete piezo response, while the other delivers a momentary signal that only appears when the user compresses the centre or edges of the unit.
The piezos respond immediately to taps on the Soundwich or any hard surface beneath it, producing sharp percussive transients. Shaking the device produces the sound of six washers sliding along machine screws and colliding against the piezos, creating a mechanical shaker tone. Compressing the unit triggers the eight tact switches, sending their characteristic click directly into the audio path with heightened presence.
The momentary output opens only when the user presses the disks. Pressing the centre produces the pure tact-switch click, while pressing the edges gradually increases the amount of built-in low-pass filtering and attenuation. Landscape indicates the strongest filtering with seven stacked lines, and the effect weakens steadily as the user moves counter-clockwise until the response becomes almost unfiltered. This behaviour works with audio or control voltage, allowing the Soundwich to function as a sculpting tool, a momentary gate, a transient trigger or a CV-attenuating controller.
Users can route external audio or CV through the Soundwich to create an immediate handheld momentary-on effect. The dual piezos provide a constant output suitable for amplification or further processing. The unit can behave as a lo-fi vocal microphone when pressed against the lips, or as a very quiet, characterful speaker when fed with an audio signal. Its sharp transient output can trigger compatible synthesiser modules without additional level boosting.
