Dual Mono Studio Microphone Amplifiers Tube - Like Telefunken Siemens V76m.
The Mercury M76m MkIV is a state-of-the-art Studio Microphone Amplifier inspired by the iconic Telefunken/Siemens V76m. It offers vintage tone and modern functionality with features such as 0 to +60dB gain control, output attenuation, high/low impedance selection, and a proprietary FDI (FET Direct Input) circuit.
Legacy and Inspiration
The Mercury M76m MkIV draws its design and sonic characteristics from the highly revered Telefunken/Siemens V76m amplifier modules, staples in European broadcast and recording studios during the late 1950s and 60s. Although tube consoles fell out of favour, the V76 modules continued to be valued for their unmatched sound quality and were frequently used in studios worldwide as outboard mic amps.
Modern Craftsmanship
Building on over two decades of experience restoring and listening to original V76 modules, Mercury Recording Equipment Co. has crafted the M76m MkIV to faithfully replicate the original's open, warm tonality. The amplifier retains the exact circuit design, high-quality components, and transformers used in its predecessors, ensuring the same vintage sound while integrating modern features.
Features & Controls
The M76m MkIV offers a robust gain control ranging from 0 to +60dB in 6dB increments, complemented by a Level Control that functions as a fader, allowing precise tone shaping. The Output Attenuation Control (-0 to -10dB) provides further flexibility, which is especially useful for electric guitar recordings. An Impedance Select Switch accommodates both high and low-impedance devices, while essential features like Phantom Power (on/off), Phase (Polarity) Reversal, and the exceptional FDI (FET Direct Input) Circuit enhance its versatility.
Mercury FDI (FET Direct Input)
Based on a class-A tube topology, the proprietary Mercury FDI circuit captures every nuance of a direct recording. The DI signal passes through the entire microphone preamp circuitry, including Mercury's custom input transformers, ensuring that each preamp's unique character is fully realized.
M72s vs M76m: A Comparison
While both the Mercury M72s and M76m serve as versatile tools for music production, they offer distinct tonal characteristics. The M72s delivers a warm, punchy sound with a thick low end, robust midrange, and an open, airy top, making it ideal for vocals, bass, drums, and guitars. In contrast, the M76m provides a warm, open, and airy tone with a more balanced EQ, excelling in vocals, bass, guitars, and room or overhead mics, with 70dB of gain and selectable impedance that makes it particularly suitable for ribbon microphones.
