The Rupert Neve Designs 551 Inductor EQ Plug-In is a software recreation of the acclaimed 551 500 Series equaliser, combining three bands of classic Rupert Neve inductor EQ with ±15 dB gain, selectable low and high-frequency curves, a proportional-Q parametric mid band, MF Hi-Q mode and an 80 Hz high-pass filter, alongside the flexibility of native AAX, AU and VST3 processing.

Rupert Neve Designs 551 Inductor EQ Plug-In

Developed by Rupert Neve Designs in collaboration with McDSP, the 551 Inductor EQ Plug-In translates the character and control of the hardware 551 into a modern software format. The original 551 draws its EQ circuitry from the Shelford Channel and takes inspiration from Rupert Neve's most celebrated vintage equaliser designs, combining powerful low-frequency shaping, a highly versatile mid band and smooth high-frequency control.

The plug-in recreates the 551's distinctive equalisation characteristics while bringing the design directly into a DAW. This approach gives recording, mixing and mastering engineers the musical response associated with the hardware without requiring a 500 Series rack, analogue cabling or external signal routing.

Classic Rupert Neve Inductor EQ Character

The original 551 uses custom-wound inductors, Class-A gain blocks and transformer-balanced circuitry to produce the harmonic richness associated with classic Rupert Neve designs. Inductors create frequency-dependent impedance through wire wound around a core, and their behaviour contributes harmonic character as signal levels increase.

Rupert Neve used inductors throughout some of his most recognised EQ designs, including the 1073, 1081 and 1084. The 551 follows this design philosophy with custom-tapped inductors that contribute weight and harmonic complexity to low frequencies while allowing substantial high-frequency boosts to retain a smooth, musical character.

The plug-in captures the tonal behaviour of this circuit philosophy, providing an EQ that can perform broad tonal enhancement as effectively as more focused frequency correction.

Low-Frequency EQ

The low-frequency section provides four selectable frequencies at 35 Hz, 60 Hz, 100 Hz and 220 Hz, covering everything from deep sub and bass enhancement to low-mid body and weight.

Engineers can switch the band between peak and shelf responses. Shelf mode supports broad low-frequency tonal shaping, while peak mode concentrates the boost or cut around the selected frequency. Up to ±15 dB of gain provides enough range for subtle balancing or substantial creative equalisation.

The resonant character of the original inductor circuit gives the low band its characteristic punch and density, making it particularly effective for kick drums, bass instruments, guitars, synthesisers and full mixes that require greater low-frequency authority.

Parametric Mid-Frequency EQ

The mid-frequency section provides selectable centre frequencies at 200 Hz, 350 Hz, 700 Hz, 1.5 kHz, 3 kHz and 6 kHz. This range covers low-mid congestion and body, vocal presence, instrument definition and upper-mid attack.

Its proportional-Q response changes the bandwidth according to the amount of gain applied. Smaller adjustments remain broad and musical, while larger boosts or cuts focus more tightly around the selected frequency. This behaviour allows the 551 to perform natural tonal shaping without sacrificing the ability to target problematic areas.

The MF Hi-Q function narrows the bandwidth further when greater precision becomes necessary. Engineers can therefore move quickly between broad musical enhancement and more focused frequency carving without changing processors.

High-Frequency EQ

The high-frequency section combines elements of vintage inductor EQ design with capacitor-based circuitry to provide the smooth character associated with classic analogue equalisers alongside the control expected from a modern production tool.

Selectable 8 kHz and 16 kHz frequencies cover presence, brightness and upper-frequency air. Peak and shelf modes further extend the range of available curves, while ±15 dB of gain allows anything from restrained tonal balancing to substantial high-frequency enhancement.

The resulting response suits vocals, acoustic instruments, overheads, strings and complete mixes where high-frequency detail needs to increase without introducing an excessively hard or brittle character.

80 Hz High-Pass Filter

A fixed 80 Hz high-pass filter with a 12 dB-per-octave slope provides straightforward control over unwanted low-frequency energy. It can remove rumble, handling noise and unnecessary sub-frequency content while retaining the useful body of many instruments and voices.

Combining the high-pass filter with the three EQ bands also allows the 551 to clean the extreme low end before using the low-frequency EQ to add controlled weight higher in the spectrum.

From Shelford Channel to 500 Series

The hardware 551 adapts circuitry developed for the Rupert Neve Designs Shelford Channel to the lower operating voltages of the 500 Series format. Rupert Neve Designs refined its transformers and circuitry during this process to retain the presence, harmonic character and musical response associated with the company's larger-format analogue equipment.

The hardware incorporates low-feedback Class-A electronics together with transformer-balanced inputs and outputs. These elements contribute to its combination of clarity and analogue character while helping minimise unwanted low-level artefacts and harshness.

The plug-in removes the physical limitations of the 500 Series format while retaining the musical EQ characteristics that define the original 551.

Native Plug-In Workflow

The Rupert Neve Designs 551 Inductor EQ Plug-In integrates the 551 directly into contemporary recording, mixing and mastering sessions. It supports AAX, AU and VST3 formats for compatibility with Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase, Nuendo, FL Studio, Ableton Live, LUNA, Reaper, Sonar, Studio One and other compatible DAWs.

Native Intel and Apple silicon support allows the plug-in to run directly on compatible computer systems without requiring dedicated DSP hardware.

iLok Authorisation

The 551 Inductor EQ Plug-In supports iLok 2 and iLok 3 USB Smart Keys, machine-based authorisation and iLok Cloud sessions through an iLok License Manager account.

Each licence provides two activations, giving engineers greater flexibility when maintaining more than one compatible production system.
