The Soma FLUX is a high-end professional synthesiser designed for modern performers and composers, offering unique expressive possibilities through a revolutionary interface that combines magnetic controls, continual touchless play, and cutting-edge sound synthesis technology.
Innovative Design and Interface
FLUX integrates the expressiveness of classical instruments, such as violin and vocals, with the versatility of modern electronic sound creation. It uses magnetic principles to control sound parameters with two magnetic bows, replacing traditional physical keys. The right-hand bow controls pitch and volume, while the left-hand bow manages various synthesis parameters. Together, they offer seamless control over 16 different sound parameters without any physical contact with the instrument’s surface, enabling fluid and dynamic musical performances.
Touchless Keyboard and Magnetic Control
Inspired by the Theremin, FLUX allows performers to manipulate sound by moving their hands in the air. However, unlike Theremin's capacitive coupling, FLUX operates on magnetic principles. The bows, held between the fingers, interact with a multipolar magnetic sensor, which tracks their position and movement. The right-hand bow’s X-axis controls pitch, the Z-axis handles volume, and flipping the bow on the Y-axis changes the octave range. This design gives performers access to six continuous octaves and additional modulation parameters, creating a broad sonic range from sub-bass to ultrasonic.
Advanced Timbre and Synthesis Control
FLUX also offers advanced control over timbres, with the left-hand bow's six-pole magnetic sensor allowing for up to 12 independent sound parameters to be managed. By flipping the bow, users can change which parameters they control, enhancing the flexibility of sound manipulation. Combined with pitch, volume, and modulation controls, performers gain comprehensive control over sound design during live performances.
Multiple Sound Engines and Presets
FLUX is equipped with various synthesis engines, such as distortion, complex FM, and physical modelling of surrealistic instruments, all available in a single firmware. Users can instantly switch between engines, making it versatile for live performance. The preset functionality allows performers to save and recall the entire state of the synthesiser, including engine settings and tunings, for efficient sound management.
Performance Modes and Playability
The instrument supports monophonic, duophonic, and polyphonic modes, with options for staccato and quantisation. Its adjustable vibrato feature enhances precision, and the clear note scale ensures ease of learning and clean intonation, offering an accessible experience compared to the more challenging Theremin.
Cutting-edge DSP Synthesis and Hi-End Sound Quality
FLUX’s synthesis relies on DSP technology, delivering high-quality sound through in-house designed digital-to-analogue converters and analogue circuits built to High-end standards. Integrated spatial effects further enrich the sonic experience, providing performers with powerful tools for creating complex and immersive soundscapes.
