High-fidelity small diaphragm tube condenser microphone featuring the EF-732 vacuum tube, a custom-wound U.S.-made output transformer, a standard cardioid capsule, optional omni and hyper-cardioid capsules available separately, and a precision adaptor allowing integration with AKG CK-series and Neumann bayonet-style capsules, making it an advanced tool for capturing detailed acoustic sources and vocals with remarkable clarity and tonal warmth.

The Telefunken ELA M 260 is a premium small diaphragm valve condenser microphone engineered for high-resolution sound capture and professional studio versatility.

Historical Background

Prior to 1959, TELEFUNKEN GmbH handled the international distribution of Neumann GmbH microphones. When Neumann transitioned to direct global distribution, TELEFUNKEN collaborated with AKG Acoustics GmbH of Austria to create a new line of microphones. This included the legendary ELA M 251, ELA M 250, the stereo ELA M 270, and the compact ELA M 260 and ELA M 261 models, all designed to uphold the brand's legacy of precision audio technology.

Circuitry and Internal Components

At the heart of the ELA M 260 lies the TELEFUNKEN EF-732 vacuum tube, selected for its ultra-low noise and musical responsiveness. Paired with a custom-wound output transformer manufactured in the United States, this circuit delivers a detailed and harmonically rich signal path. The result is a microphone with smooth transients, balanced frequency response, and a characteristically open top-end.

Capsule System and Expandability

Supplied with a cardioid capsule, the ELA M 260 comes with a cardioid capsule for a focused directional capture ideal for isolating sources in complex acoustic environments. For added flexibility, users can expand their tonal palette with separately available omni-directional and hyper-cardioid capsules. A specially engineered adaptor—designed in collaboration with Chip Machokas—further enhances compatibility by allowing the use of AKG CK-series capsules, as well as Neumann bayonet-mount capsules, opening the door to a wide range of sonic options.

Audio Performance and Recording Applications

Engineered for clarity, detail, and natural presence, the ELA M 260 captures acoustic instruments with remarkable realism. Its small diaphragm excels at rendering the intricate nuances of strings, woodwinds, percussion, and acoustic guitars. The microphone also shines in overhead drum recording and close-mic scenarios requiring precision. Despite its compact design, it delivers impressive results on vocals, making it suitable for traditional and creative studio applications alike.
