Avid has just released its latest
Pro Tools 12.8 which in addition to some workflow improvements provides Native Dolby Atmos Support for Pro Tools HD users as well as new collaboration features.
Pro Tools Goes Dolby Atmos
The big announcement with this release is clearly the native support for Dolby Atmos which it does by supporting 7.1.2 and 7.0.2 tracks and stem formats. Furthermore it also includes a universal panner which now includes the height axis for both stems and Dolby metadata and support for the ADM BWAV file format.
Pro Tools 12.8 also boasts a new automated routing system which lets you assign an audio path dynamically to a “bed” (bus) or as an object.
A new Atmos tab now appears in Peripherals to connect to Dolby Atmos Renderer and monitoring can be done directly in Pro Tools.
By integrating Dolby Atmos directly in Pro Tools Avid has also taken the opportunity to upgrade the Avid S6 software which can now add 3D panning control by combining the joystick to control X and Y axis while the Z axis is controlled by a knob next to them.
Cloud Collaboration
With the lukewarm response of the collaboration aspect of Pro Tools, Avid have made a few changes that should help the process. First of all and possibly the most important to our eyes, is the the improvement to the Cloud pricing. You can now increase your storage by 10GB for as little as $4.99 a month. This should allow producers and musicians to work on a project with a band.
Furthermore, up to 10 Pro Tools user (Pro Tools First, Pro Tools and Pro Tools HD) can work together on a single project and a new Selective Project Sync lets you choose to save your project on the cloud or locally.
Another useful improvement is the ability to see Cloud-based tracks that haven’t been downloaded in the project.
As is the case with any upgrade, Avid have also worked on a huge list of improvements and bug fixes for both HD and non HD users including upgrades to their existing plug-ins. You can find a list of all the upgrades on the
