Founded in Iisalmi, Finland, in 1978 by Ilpo Martikainen and Topi Partanen, Genelec grew from a project to develop an active monitoring loudspeaker for Finnish national broadcaster YLE. The resulting S30 established principles of active amplification, acoustic accuracy and room adaptability that continue to define the company today. Landmark designs such as the 1031A and 8000 Series, followed by the SAM range and The Ones coaxial monitors, have made Genelec one of the most widely recognised names in professional studio monitoring.
Genelec’s approach combines active amplification, DSP, Directivity Control Waveguide (DCW), Minimum Diffraction Enclosure (MDE) and Smart Active Monitoring (SAM) technologies to deliver consistent frequency response, controlled dispersion and precise stereo imaging. Its GLM calibration system with AutoCal extends this philosophy into the listening environment, allowing compatible monitors and subwoofers to be measured, aligned and optimised for anything from stereo production to large immersive systems. Designed and manufactured in Finland, Genelec monitors are engineered as complete monitoring systems where drivers, amplification, enclosure, DSP and room calibration work together as a unified design.
