The Antelope Audio Edge Note is a small-diaphragm condenser modelling microphone for studio and instrument recording, combining a 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response, 146 dB maximum SPL, -42 dB sensitivity, switchable -10 dB/-20 dB pad, 75 Hz/115 Hz high-pass filter and 13 classic microphone emulations in a compact design compatible with conventional microphone preamps.
Antelope Audio designed the Edge Note to capture instruments with high accuracy while offering considerably more tonal flexibility than a conventional pencil condenser microphone. Its small-diaphragm condenser design suits detailed recordings of drums, percussion, brass, acoustic guitars and strings, while the microphone modelling system allows engineers to select different microphone characteristics after capture.
The Edge Note works with standard microphone preamps, which makes it straightforward to integrate into existing studio recording systems without requiring a dedicated Antelope Audio preamp.
The Edge Note handles sound pressure levels of up to 146 dB SPL, allowing engineers to position it close to particularly loud instruments while maintaining a clean recording signal. This high SPL capability makes it particularly suitable for snare drums, hi-hats, brass instruments and other sources that can challenge more sensitive condenser microphones.
Its high SPL handling also expands placement options. Engineers can position the microphone where the instrument delivers the desired attack, detail and tonal balance without choosing a position primarily to protect the microphone from excessive level.
A 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response enables the Edge Note to capture the fundamental frequencies and upper harmonic information of a broad range of instruments. This wide response makes the microphone useful across percussion, acoustic instruments, brass and strings.
The small-diaphragm format also makes the Edge Note particularly appropriate when a recording requires precise transient information and detailed articulation.
The Edge Note combines its condenser capsule with 13 microphone emulations, giving recording engineers access to a selection of modelled microphone characteristics from a single physical microphone.
Antelope Audio created these digital models to recreate the frequency response and tonal colour associated with classic studio microphones. This approach gives engineers greater flexibility when selecting a microphone character and reduces the need to rely on multiple physical microphones for different tonal options.
The modelling capability also provides additional flexibility during production, allowing the captured performance to form the basis for different microphone sounds rather than committing every tonal decision solely through the physical microphone choice.
A built-in pad provides -10 dB and -20 dB attenuation settings for recording particularly powerful sources. The pad reduces the microphone's output level before it reaches the following input stage, helping engineers manage high signal levels and avoid unwanted overload or distortion.
The two attenuation levels provide useful control when moving between sources with substantially different acoustic output, from acoustic instruments to close-miked drums and brass.
The Edge Note includes a switchable high-pass filter with 75 Hz and 115 Hz settings. These options help engineers reduce unwanted low-frequency information before it reaches later stages of the recording chain.
The filter can control rumble, handling noise, excessive proximity-related low frequencies and unwanted low-end energy from the recording environment. The two frequencies provide additional flexibility according to the instrument and microphone placement, helping produce a cleaner and tighter recording at source.
The Edge Note works with conventional microphone preamps, allowing studios to incorporate its modelling capabilities into established recording setups. Engineers can therefore combine the microphone with their preferred preamp and recording chain rather than relying on a proprietary preamplifier.
This compatibility makes the Edge Note suitable for professional studios, project studios and mobile recording systems that require microphone modelling without replacing the existing front end.
