Deep Bass Extension
Experience low-frequency extension down to 17 Hz, allowing for accurate monitoring of sub-bass content and LFE effects that conventional systems cannot reproduce effectively.
The Barefoot Sound LFE12 Subwoofer is a 12-inch Dual-Force™ active studio subwoofer for Footprint® Series monitoring systems, combining dual opposing 12-inch aluminium-cone woofers, 1400 watts of amplification, 17 Hz to 120 Hz frequency response, dedicated LFE and stereo BOOST connectivity, selectable low-pass filtering and precise level control for stereo, surround and immersive audio monitoring.
The Barefoot Sound LFE12 extends Footprint Series monitoring into the lowest audible frequencies while retaining the speed, definition and control required for critical studio work. Its sealed 46-litre cabinet houses two opposing 12-inch aluminium-cone woofers and a 1400W power amplifier, producing low-frequency extension down to 17 Hz and a maximum peak SPL of at least 122 dB according to its core technical specification.
Barefoot Sound designed the LFE12 for several professional monitoring roles. It can operate as a dedicated low-frequency effects channel in 5.1, 7.1, Dolby Atmos and other immersive configurations, or extend the bass response of a stereo Footprint monitoring system through its dedicated BOOST signal path.
Barefoot Sound's Dual-Force™ architecture places two 12-inch aluminium-cone woofers on opposing sides of the enclosure. Powerful neodymium motor structures drive both woofers in phase acoustically, while the opposing physical orientation causes their mechanical forces to work against one another.
This force-cancelling arrangement substantially reduces the mechanical energy transferred to the cabinet. Rather than allowing driver movement to excite the enclosure unnecessarily, the Dual-Force design creates a more stable foundation for low-frequency reproduction. This approach helps the LFE12 produce deep bass with the transient definition and control demanded by recording, mixing, mastering and critical playback applications.
The dual-driver arrangement also provides considerable acoustic output from a comparatively compact 18 x 16 x 17-inch enclosure, making the LFE12 suitable for professional rooms where both low-frequency performance and efficient use of space matter.
A 1400W power amplifier drives the LFE12, providing the power and headroom required for demanding low-frequency material. The system covers 17 Hz to 120 Hz at ±3 dB, with a specified -3 dB bass response at 17 Hz, Q of 0.707 and a 12 dB-per-octave asymptotic slope.
This extension allows engineers to monitor information that conventional nearfield systems cannot reproduce at meaningful levels. Sub-bass content, LFE effects, synthesiser fundamentals, kick drum energy and other low-frequency programme material become easier to evaluate within the monitoring environment.
The LFE12 specifies THD of no more than 2% at 90 dB SPL at one metre above 35 Hz, supporting accurate assessment of low-frequency balance rather than simply increasing bass output.
A dedicated balanced XLR LFE input allows the LFE12 to handle the low-frequency effects channel in multichannel and immersive monitoring installations. Engineers can select an 80 Hz or 120 Hz low-pass filter to suit the monitoring format and system configuration.
The selectable 0 dB or +10 dB gain setting supports integration with different LFE operating standards and system requirements, while the stepped level control provides repeatable adjustment from +3 dB to -9 dB.
These controls make the LFE12 suitable for 5.1, 7.1, Dolby Atmos and other immersive environments where engineers need controlled, repeatable low-frequency reproduction.
The LFE12 also functions as a low-frequency extension system for stereo Footprint monitors. Dual BOOST inputs accept the left and right monitor signals, while full-bandwidth THRU outputs pass those signals onwards to the main loudspeakers.
Selectable 60 Hz and 80 Hz BOOST filters provide flexibility when matching the subwoofer to different Footprint models and monitoring configurations. Rather than restricting the LFE12 to conventional LFE duties, this architecture allows studios to create an extended full-range Footprint monitoring system for stereo recording, production, mixing and mastering.
Barefoot Sound engineered the LFE12 specifically to complement the Footprint Series, including the Footprint®01, Footprint®02, Footprint®03 and Footprint®03C.
The combination of dedicated BOOST connectivity, selectable filtering, stepped level adjustment and high-output low-frequency reproduction gives Footprint users a purpose-designed route to full-range monitoring. The LFE12 adds low-frequency extension while maintaining the accuracy, transient response and controlled presentation associated with professional Footprint monitoring systems.
The supplied dual-switch foot controller gives engineers immediate hands-free control over the LFE and BOOST signal paths. Each switch independently mutes its respective input, while both operating modes can function simultaneously.
This arrangement makes rapid monitoring comparisons considerably easier. An engineer can audition a stereo mix with and without BOOST extension, mute the dedicated LFE channel, or switch between monitoring conditions without reaching behind the subwoofer or interrupting the listening position.
A stepped rotary input level control adjusts the signal from +3 dB to -9 dB. Unlike a continuously variable control, the stepped mechanism provides repeatable settings that simplify calibration, documentation and recall.
A separate gain switch provides 0 dB and +10 dB options, while dedicated filter selections provide 80 Hz or 120 Hz operation for LFE mode and 60 Hz or 80 Hz operation for BOOST mode. Together, these controls allow engineers to configure the LFE12 for different monitoring formats, speaker combinations and room requirements.
The LFE12 uses a sealed cabinet with 46 litres of total internal volume and acoustic damping throughout the enclosure. Its construction prioritises rigidity and reduces unwanted resonance, complementing the mechanical force cancellation provided by the opposing Dual-Force woofers.
A textured Footprint Gray polyester coating provides a durable professional finish, while the 65 lb, or 30 kg, enclosure gives the high-output dual-woofer system a substantial physical foundation.
Balanced XLR connections provide professional analogue integration, with a specified input impedance of 20 kΩ. The LFE12 includes dedicated LFE connectivity alongside dual BOOST inputs and full-bandwidth THRU outputs, allowing one unit to accommodate both immersive LFE and stereo bass-extension applications.
A USB-C port provides factory calibration access. The LFE12 accepts 100 to 230 VAC mains power, consumes approximately 30W at idle and specifies a maximum power consumption of 1500W.
The LFE12 delivers a 17 Hz to 120 Hz frequency range at ±3 dB and uses two 12-inch Dual-Force woofers with neodymium motors. Each driver has a nominal 8-ohm impedance, while the system provides omnidirectional 360-degree horizontal and vertical low-frequency coverage.
The main technical specification states a maximum peak SPL of at least 122 dB. Barefoot Sound's separate Atmos specifications quote 132 dB maximum peak SPL at one metre in free space under the stated Atmos measurement conditions. These figures describe different measurement criteria and should therefore remain distinct when evaluating system performance.
The recommended listening distance for HE studio monitoring applications spans approximately one to 1.5 metres, or 3.25 to 5 feet.
