Vintage Sound, Modern Reliability
Experience the classic warmth and character of vintage preamps with the enhanced stability and lower noise performance of modern engineering for superior audio quality.
The British Audio Technologies Altec 1588 500-Series Mic Preamp is a discrete, transformer-balanced microphone preamplifier delivering up to 55dB of gain, extended 20Hz to 25kHz frequency response, and Cinemag input and output transformers, engineered from the classic Altec 1588C circuit with modern components for enhanced stability, reduced noise, and precise tonal control.
The BAT 1588 builds upon the revered Altec 1588C transistor-based topology, preserving its minimalist signal path while integrating modern engineering refinements. The design eliminates op-amps and integrated circuits entirely, relying instead on discrete transistor architecture to maintain signal integrity and tonal character. This approach ensures that the preamp retains the immediacy and depth associated with vintage designs while achieving improved consistency, lower noise performance, and greater reliability in contemporary studio environments.
Cinemag transformers at both the input and output stages define the sonic identity of the BAT 1588. These transformers introduce harmonic complexity and controlled saturation, shaping transients and enhancing midrange presence. The result is a musically engaging tone that complements a wide range of sources, from vocals to instruments, while maintaining clarity across the full frequency spectrum. The transformer-balanced design also ensures robust signal handling and optimal impedance matching.
The preamp provides approximately 55dB of gain, allowing it to accommodate dynamic microphones, condenser microphones, and ribbon microphones when paired with appropriate gain staging. A dedicated trim control enables fine adjustment of input level, allowing engineers to dial in subtle harmonic saturation or maintain cleaner headroom. The inclusion of an output fader introduces further tonal flexibility, enabling intentional saturation of the output transformer while controlling the level sent to subsequent stages in the signal chain.
The BAT 1588 maintains a tightly controlled frequency response with only 0.5dB deviation from 20Hz to 25kHz. This range ensures accurate low-end reproduction and extended high-frequency detail while preserving the tonal colour introduced by the circuit. High-quality components, including 1% tolerance metal film resistors and Nichicon Gold capacitors, contribute to consistent performance and long-term stability.
The preamp enhances vocal recordings by adding warmth, presence, and forward positioning within a mix. It shapes drum transients with controlled rounding and added punch, introduces harmonic richness to guitars, and injects character into line-level sources such as keyboards and synthesisers. Its tonal profile supports both tracking and creative processing applications where musical colour and depth are required.
The BAT 1588 operates within the standard 500 Series format using ±16V power rails, ensuring compatibility with professional modular racks. Hand assembly in small production batches ensures attention to detail and consistency across units. High-quality potentiometers and E-switch components provide reliable tactile control and durability in demanding studio environments.
