The Chord Hugo 2 is a compact high-performance DAC and headphone amplifier designed with advanced FPGA architecture, WTA (Watts Transient Aligned) filters and precision-machined aircraft-grade aluminium construction to deliver exceptional sound quality for portable and home audio systems.
Aircraft-grade aluminium casework and refined controls
Hugo 2 uses a precision-machined aircraft-grade aluminium chassis, improving durability and aesthetics over its predecessor. Its lower profile and four illuminated spherical controls allow intuitive management of power, input selection, filtering options and the crossfeed system. The enlarged top-mounted volume sphere enhances usability, while the design anticipates future expansion with potential side modules. The inclusion of a full-function remote and line-level output mode provides integration into conventional hi-fi and desktop audio setups without compromising portability.
Superior technical performance and reduced distortion
Hugo 2 employs cutting-edge FPGA technology combined with WTA filtering, delivering improvements in timing accuracy, dynamic range and noise reduction. The output stage features upgraded digital DC servos, removing the need for inline capacitors. This reduces distortion and enhances power delivery to headphones or audio systems. Although a short power-on delay results from this upgrade, the overall performance gains justify the enhancement.
Comprehensive digital connectivity and high-resolution playback
The device offers four digital inputs: optical, coaxial, high-definition USB and extended-range Bluetooth. High-resolution audio is supported up to 768kHz PCM and DSD512 (Octa DSD) via USB. Analogue outputs include dual RCA, 3.5mm and 6.35mm headphone connections, ensuring compatibility across a wide range of headphones and audio systems. Laser-etched function labelling provides clear operation in all environments.
Customisable filtering for sound tailoring
Hugo 2 features a four-mode user-selectable filter system, providing precise control over sound characteristics. Users can choose between warm and smooth or transparent and incisive tonal responses, optimising playback for personal taste or system synergy.
Advanced crossfeed for headphone listening
The digital crossfeed system enhances headphone listening by replicating the spatial characteristics of loudspeaker setups. It introduces a delayed and shaped signal from each channel to the opposite side, simulating a natural stereo image based on binaural research. Three crossfeed modes are selectable via a dedicated control sphere.
Extended battery life and flexible charging options
The battery delivers approximately seven hours of portable operation. Two automated charging modes are available via the dedicated Micro USB port: a fast mode at 1.8 amperes and a slow mode below one ampere. An integrated indicator provides real-time battery and charging status information.
Improved output stage and power capability
The output stage has been redesigned with digital DC servos replacing inline capacitors. This significantly lowers distortion and boosts output drive capability, allowing Hugo 2 to power demanding headphones while preserving clarity and dynamic performance.
