Versatile Dynamics Processing
Offers multi-mode compression, gating, and saturation, allowing for a wide range of sound shaping options tailored to various audio sources and artistic goals.
The Cranborne Audio Brick Lane MC4 is a 19 inch 2U digitally controlled four-channel fully analogue Modal PWM dynamics processor that combines multi-mode compression, analogue lookahead gating, harmonic saturation, Mid Side routing, dual-band processing, de-essing and network-enabled recall into a single mastering-grade dynamics platform.
Brick Lane MC4 expands the architecture introduced in the Brick Lane 500 by delivering four discrete analogue PWM dynamics engines under full digital control. It preserves the musical behaviour, harmonic interaction and non-linear dynamics response of classic analogue compressors while introducing routing flexibility, multi-stage dynamics architectures and precision recall expected in modern hybrid studios. The unit supports mono, stereo, Mid Side, dual-band and series configurations without requiring external patching.
Brick Lane MC4 applies proprietary Modal PWM gain control to reshape compression envelopes, detector behaviour, saturation topology and time constants at circuit level rather than through conventional ratio based control. This design allows the compressor to operate across fundamentally different behaviours while retaining extremely low distortion, ultra-fast response and programme dependent harmonic behaviour.
Six modal compression types provide distinct analogue topologies. Velvet delivers tube-inspired musical compression, Float provides opto-style transparency, Smash produces aggressive FET-style transient control, Tame enables ultra-fast surgical dynamics, Glue supplies bus compression cohesion and Polish functions as a mastering-grade analogue limiter using predictive lookahead control.
The Stress circuit introduces dynamically linked analogue harmonic saturation that evolves in response to gain reduction, envelope shape and programme level. Each compression mode deploys a dedicated multi-band saturation topology which recreates the natural interaction between dynamics and harmonic density found in classic analogue designs. This architecture allows Brick Lane MC4 to provide tonal enhancement that remains inherently connected to dynamic behaviour rather than applying static saturation after compression.
ENIGMA exposes normally inaccessible analogue compression parameters and allows direct control of compression knee behaviour, attack and release weighting, detector emphasis and frequency-sensitive response shaping. These parameters allow Brick Lane MC4 to adapt a single compression mode across radically different sources and artistic objectives while retaining predictable analogue behaviour.
Each of the four dynamics channels operates independently or in linked configurations. Stereo and Mid Side routing maintains image stability and allows independent centre and width control for mastering and mix bus applications. Series routing allows two channels to process a single signal path sequentially to divide gain reduction across stages, reducing artefacts while increasing control. Dual-band mode splits audio into low and high frequency bands and processes each band independently to stabilise low-frequency energy and preserve transient clarity without phase degradation.
A dedicated De-Esser mode applies analogue lookahead detection to anticipate sibilant transients before gain reduction. This architecture prevents overshoot and pumping while delivering precise high-frequency attenuation that maintains tonal integrity. The same predictive voltage detection underpins the compression and gate circuits, enabling true zero-latency transient control.
Brick Lane MC4 provides four assignable external sidechain inputs and fully flexible internal sidechain routing. Each compressor may select its own input signal, another channel or any external sidechain source. Balanced insert points on all four channels allow external analogue hardware to integrate directly into the internal processing chain. Insert routing remains available within Mid Side encoding stages to support independent mid and side processing.
USB and Ethernet connectivity allow full remote control, automation and recall through the dedicated control plugin. All parameters store and recall instantly while front panel LED encoders and the colour TFT screen reflect all remote adjustments in real time.
