Natural stereo imaging made easy
Achieve a natural stereo image without the need for complex placement experiments, ensuring consistent sound quality across various pianos and environments.
The DPA DPK2015 Piano Stereo Kit is a matched wide cardioid stereo microphone system engineered for accurate, high-headroom piano recording with fast mounting, controlled stereo imaging and full frequency capture across the entire dynamic range of grand and upright pianos.
The DPK2015 Piano Stereo Kit delivers a turnkey professional piano miking solution that unifies DPA’s classic wide cardioid capsule design with a modern, performance-optimised mounting and isolation architecture. The system provides consistent stereo imaging, stable physical positioning and extremely low distortion under very high sound pressure levels, making it suitable for both studio production and demanding live touring environments.
The wide cardioid polar pattern forms a controlled but open pickup zone that maintains tonal integrity while reducing room interference and phase interaction compared with conventional cardioid or supercardioid designs. This allows engineers to achieve a natural stereo field with simplified placement, even in reflective rooms or confined stages.
The matched 2015 wide cardioid microphones operate across a 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response and maintain a flat effective range from 40 Hz to 18 kHz at 30 cm, ensuring accurate low-frequency weight, articulate midrange definition and extended high-frequency clarity. A nominal sensitivity of 12 mV/Pa allows strong signal output into any professional microphone preamplifier, while the low 18 dB(A) self-noise floor preserves micro-dynamics in quiet passages and long reverberant decays.
The capsules withstand extremely high sound pressure levels up to 153 dB SPL peak without distortion, allowing the microphones to track aggressive classical repertoire, contemporary piano techniques and percussive extended playing styles without compression artefacts or tonal collapse.
The integrated gooseneck mounts and lightweight stereo boom deliver anchored placement directly on the piano structure or external stands, maintaining fixed stereo geometry during performance. The mechanical isolation architecture reduces structure-borne vibration, pedal noise transmission and low-frequency rumble, preserving tonal clarity and spatial accuracy even on resonant stages.
The compact mounting hardware enables installation inside or outside the piano with the lid open or closed, providing consistent results across grand and upright piano configurations.
The DPK2015 operates on standard 48 V phantom power and draws only 0.7 mA, allowing reliable use with any professional mixing console, recording interface or remote preamp system. The balanced XLR outputs ensure stable long-distance cable runs without noise pickup or signal loss.
Each microphone uses a compact 19 mm pencil housing that minimises visual impact and allows close positioning around the soundboard, hammers and string sections while maintaining mechanical robustness suitable for touring use.
The DPK2015 consolidates microphones, isolation mounts, cabling, windscreens and stereo mounting hardware into a unified workflow that allows consistent stereo capture with minimal setup time. The kit structure reduces setup variables, simplifies signal routing and ensures predictable results across venues, rehearsal rooms and recording studios.
This design supports engineers who require speed, repeatability and sonic neutrality without sacrificing placement flexibility or spatial realism.
