The Echo Fix EF-X3 Vintage Voice Desktop is a 100% analogue tape echo, spring reverb and BBD chorus processor that combines the sound and behaviour of vintage tape echo machines with modern control, extended delay capabilities, advanced modulation, stereo routing options and live tape looping functions.

Classic Tape Echo Character with Modern Control

The EF-X3 Vintage Voice builds on the acclaimed EF-X3 platform with a voice inspired by iconic vintage tape echo units. It delivers warm, saturated repeats with the compression, harmonic richness and natural degradation associated with magnetic tape, while introducing a collection of modern enhancements that expand its creative potential.

The Vintage Voice version features a distinctive blue front panel alongside walnut wood side panels, giving the unit a classic appearance that reflects its sonic character.

Advanced Wow, Flutter and Tape Modulation

Unlike traditional tape echoes that rely solely on mechanical inconsistencies, the EF-X3 Vintage Voice provides dedicated controls for shaping tape instability. Wow and Flutter use sample-and-hold random modulation to recreate the constantly evolving movement found in ageing tape machines.

The expanded modulation section introduces Rate and Depth controls that adjust the speed and intensity of the modulation. A continuously variable Shape control blends smoothly between a sine wave and sample-and-hold waveform, allowing precise adjustment from subtle tape movement to highly unpredictable modulation.

This level of control makes it possible to recreate everything from pristine vintage echoes to heavily worn tape textures.

Analogue Spring Reverb

A fully analogue spring reverb section complements the tape echo and recreates the spacious ambience found in classic vintage echo machines.

The spring tank produces natural reflections with depth and character that integrate seamlessly with the tape delay, making it suitable for guitars, synthesisers, vocals and studio production.

A dedicated wet output also allows the reverb and chorus signals to integrate easily into more complex recording and live setups.

Extended Tape Speed Range

The Vintage Voice extends the motor speed range to provide longer delay times and increasingly degraded tape textures.

Tape speeds range from 3 IPS to 15 IPS, allowing delays of up to approximately 1.2 seconds while introducing progressively darker repeats, increased saturation and authentic lo-fi characteristics as the motor slows.

A dedicated motor switch also enables manual tape slowdown effects during performance.

Live Tape Looping and Sound-on-Sound

The Record and Erase Off switches transform the EF-X3 into a live tape looping instrument.

Disabling the Erase head preserves the recorded loop indefinitely, while switching off the Record head allows new performances to layer over the existing material without replacing it. This Sound-on-Sound workflow encourages experimental performance, ambient composition and evolving textures using genuine tape rather than digital looping.

An independent SOS playback head operates separately from the standard playback head combinations, providing additional flexibility for loop creation and manipulation.

Analogue Signal Path

The EF-X3 Vintage Voice maintains a completely analogue signal path throughout.

Its analogue BBD chorus includes dedicated Rate and Depth controls that produce rich modulation without introducing digital conversion, while the analogue spring reverb and tape echo preserve the organic response expected from traditional analogue hardware.

The result remains dynamic, responsive and highly musical across a wide range of instruments.

Flexible Playback Head Configuration

Four playback heads provide extensive delay pattern options.

Seven selectable playback modes combine the first three playback heads in different arrangements, while the dedicated Sound-on-Sound head can operate independently or alongside any playback configuration. This allows users to create everything from single slapback echoes to dense multi-head rhythmic patterns.

Each playback head also features an individual output, making it possible to create true stereo ping-pong delays from a mono source by routing the outputs independently through a mixer or DAW.

Professional Connectivity

The EF-X3 Vintage Voice includes balanced input and output connections for studio integration alongside dedicated rear-panel wet outputs for the chorus and spring reverb.

CV inputs accept 0 to 5V control signals from compatible expression pedals, allowing external control of motor speed and feedback for dynamic live performance.

Remote footswitch inputs allow independent muting of the echo, chorus and reverb sections.

Vintage Preamp and Tone Shaping

A front-panel FET preamp provides dedicated Guitar and Line input modes inspired by vintage recording equipment.

Bass and Treble controls shape the echo signal independently of the dry path, allowing precise tonal adjustment without affecting the original source. A High and Low output switch accommodates a variety of amplifiers, mixers and recording interfaces.

Built for Reliability

Echo Fix has specialised in servicing and restoring tape echoes for nearly fifteen years, and that experience informs every aspect of the EF-X3 Vintage Voice.

An automatic tape stop function detects periods without audio and stops the transport to reduce unnecessary tape wear and extend motor life. Users can disable the feature via a rear-panel switch when continuous tape movement is preferred.

The removable lid provides easy maintenance access, while scratch-resistant panels improve long-term durability. Every unit includes two tape loops, a universal 100 to 240V power supply and a two-year warranty for qualifying pre-sale purchases.
