The Ex Machina Pulsar mkII is a compact 3-way Active Studio Monitor that excels in various studio environments. Whether positioned nearfield or midfield in larger control rooms or as the primary monitor in a smaller space, the Pulsar delivers reliable and critically accurate sound.
Cabinet Construction
The Pulsar's success lies significantly in its cabinet construction. Ex Machina uses sealed, highly braced cabinets built from thick Valchromat. This material mitigates group delay and turbulence, outperforming MDF and plywood, making it an excellent choice for acoustic enclosures.
Coaxial Design
The midrange speaker, situated in the upper section of the Pulsar, is crafted from TeXtreme, a lightweight and stiff material. This design allows Ex Machina to pair the cone with a free-standing tweeter, a pioneering feature in monitor design. Instead of the commonly used aluminium tweeters, the Pulsar uses GrapheneQ, which offers a superior stiffness-to-weight ratio, ensuring an expansive sweet spot.
Subwoofer Performance
Ex Machina collaborates with SEAS to deliver a 22cm subwoofer with large magnets, voice coils, and symmetrical suspension. The subwoofer's aluminium alloy diaphragm supports a 28mm linear peak-to-peak excursion and can extend to 56mm without damage. These characteristics enable the Pulsar to deliver robust low frequencies with the speed and precision needed for critical studio decisions.
Power and DSP
The Pulsar is equipped with Class D amplifiers from Second Generation Hypex Ncore, providing exceptional linear power with minimal distortion and low output impedance. Each loudspeaker uses a SHARC DSP for digital crossovers and protection limiters, AKM Velvet Sound converters and a low jitter clock for seamless conversion.
S/N and Calibration Tag
Each Pulsar monitor undergoes a unique calibration process. Ex Machina assigns a specific set of measurements to each monitor and calibrates them in-house to linearise frequency and phase response. This ensures uniformity across all monitors produced by the brand.
