Effortless Three-Octave Access
Performers can switch between three octaves instantly without moving their hands, allowing for greater focus on melody and pitch accuracy while maintaining a stable finger position.
The Haken Audio TriOctave Pedal is a dual footswitch octave controller for the Haken Audio Continuum family that provides fast, accurate three-octave switching through dedicated firmware integration, enabling performers to play across a three-octave range while maintaining consistent finger placement on the continuous playing surface.
The Haken Audio TriOctave Pedal expands the expressive capabilities of the Haken Audio Continuum by allowing performers to access a three-octave range without moving their hands across the playing surface. Rather than relying on large horizontal finger movements, players can keep their fingers in a stable home position and instantly shift octaves using the paired footswitches. This approach supports faster playing while maintaining the precise pitch placement required by continuous-pitch instruments.
Unlike traditional keyboard instruments that rely on fixed tuning and discrete keys, the Continuum demands accurate finger positioning for every note. The TriOctave Pedal complements this playing method by reducing unnecessary hand movement, making rapid melodic passages more practical while preserving the instrument's natural pitch inflections and expressive control.
The TriOctave Pedal builds upon a performance concept pioneered by Oskar Sala during the 1930s on the Trautonium. Sala demonstrated that careful finger positioning within a single octave, combined with rapid octave switching via foot pedals, allowed performers to execute technically demanding passages with remarkable speed and precision.
This technique translates naturally to the Haken Audio Continuum, where players maintain a carefully positioned hand across one octave while the pedal instantly changes octave range. As a result, performers achieve fluid three-octave performances using subtle finger pressure adjustments instead of large hand movements.
Haken Audio specifically optimises the TriOctave Pedal for use with Continuum and ContinuuMini firmware. The pedal consists of two Yamaha FC-5 footswitches housed within a custom 3D-printed non-slip enclosure that provides stable operation during performance.
The supplied TRS adapters allow direct connection to the Slim Continuum, ContinuuMini and Full or Half Size Thick Continuum models, ensuring compatibility across the Continuum product range.
The TriOctave Pedal integrates seamlessly with compatible Continuum instruments through dedicated pedal connections.
When connected to the Slim Continuum, the pedal uses the 3.5 mm I2C input, leaving both Pedal 1 and Pedal 2 available for additional controllers. This configuration allows performers to combine the TriOctave Pedal with a Yamaha FC-7 expression pedal and a Yamaha FC-3A or FC-3 continuous damper pedal for an expanded performance setup.
The ContinuuMini and Thick Continuum models also support the TriOctave Pedal, although they do not provide the Slim Continuum's three-pedal capability.
The TriOctave Pedal combines two reliable Yamaha FC-5 footswitches within a purpose-designed 3D-printed enclosure that prevents movement during performance. The enclosure incorporates a non-slip base to provide secure positioning on a wide range of floor surfaces, helping performers maintain accurate octave switching throughout demanding playing sessions.
