The HLabs EQ169+ is a mastering-grade, four-band equaliser that builds on the legacy of the original 169 with a comprehensive upgrade in both functionality and precision.
Precision and Build Quality
The EQ169+ uses fully stepped 11-position controls for all parameters, ensuring exact recall and matched stereo operation. It employs 100% discrete through-hole components, including precision resistors and capacitors for channel matching within ±0.1dB. The unit is meticulously handcrafted in France to meet the demands of both professional mixing and mastering environments.
Expanded Equalisation Capabilities
Users can access two independent gain ranges: a standard mode with ±12dB on the presence bands and ±15dB on the shelves, or a mastering mode with ±4dB and ±5dB respectively for finer control. The equaliser introduces an extended set of filters, including a 10-position high-pass filter and a selectable low shelf tuned at either 20Hz or 60Hz to manage low-frequency build-up. Two midrange “presence” bands provide 22 selectable centre frequencies ranging from 150Hz to 7kHz, offering broad yet surgical control over the mids.
High-Frequency Detail and Output Control
A smooth, natural-sounding high shelf can be set at 20kHz or 35kHz, allowing engineers to add subtle air and brightness. The inclusion of an output gain stage further enhances flexibility, especially in mastering chains.
Connectivity and Performance
The EQ169+ features transformerless input and output stages for maximum transparency, though an optional Carnhill-equipped transformer output version is planned. It supports a maximum input and output level of +22dBU, with a frequency response flat within ±0.1dB from 5.4Hz to over 35kHz. With extremely low total harmonic distortion at 0.005% @ 0dBU and a signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 108dB, it guarantees pristine audio fidelity. The unit also presents high headroom with input and output impedances of 48kΩ and 50Ω, respectively.
Professional Engineering, Handmade in France
With its robust build and meticulous engineering, the EQ169+ caters to engineers seeking high-resolution control in both mastering and tracking scenarios. Its feature-rich architecture makes it a worthy successor to classic Studer-based EQ designs while firmly placing it in the modern era.
