The HLabs EQ169S is a 2-channel 1U rackmount analogue equaliser based on the classic Studer 169 mixing console EQ circuit, combining ±15dB high and low shelving filters with a continuously variable 150Hz to 7kHz Presence band, transformerless analogue I/O, true relay bypass and +22dBu maximum operating level.

Classic Studer 169-Inspired Equalisation

HLabs bases the EQ169S on the equaliser circuit from the Studer 169 mixing console, retaining the straightforward three-band architecture that helped establish the original console's reputation for smooth, musical tone shaping. The design provides broad tonal control rather than highly surgical filtering, making it suitable for tracking, mixing and analogue processing chains.

The EQ169S houses two channels of equalisation in a single 1U rack unit, allowing engineers to process stereo sources or two independent mono signals.

High and Low Shelving EQ

The EQ169S provides fixed-frequency high and low shelving filters with up to ±15dB of adjustment. The low shelf operates at 20Hz and provides substantial control over low-frequency weight, allowing engineers to reinforce or reduce the bottom end while retaining the broad response associated with the original design.

The 20kHz high shelf also offers ±15dB of adjustment. Its high turnover frequency makes it particularly useful for shaping openness, air and upper-frequency character without behaving like a narrow high-frequency filter.

Continuously Variable Presence Control

Between the two shelving bands sits the characteristic Studer-style Presence filter. The EQ169S provides ±11dB of gain with a continuously variable centre frequency from 150Hz to 7kHz and a Q of approximately 1.0.

This wide frequency range allows the Presence control to address body, low-mid density, midrange character, presence and upper-mid definition. Its relatively broad Q maintains smooth, musical shaping across the available range rather than concentrating adjustment into a narrow frequency band.

Transformerless Analogue Signal Path

HLabs equips the EQ169S with transformerless inputs and outputs using high-grade operational amplifiers. This topology maintains a transparent interface around the character of the EQ circuit and supports professional studio signal levels.

The unit accepts a maximum input and output level of +22dBu. It provides a 48kΩ input impedance and a low 50Ω output impedance, making it straightforward to integrate with professional recording consoles, converters, preamps and other outboard processors.

True Bypass and Output Level Monitoring

Relay-operated true bypass allows the signal to bypass the EQ circuitry for direct processed-versus-unprocessed comparisons. This makes level-conscious A/B evaluation easier during tracking and mixing.

A multicolour output level indicator monitors the post-EQ signal, helping engineers identify rising output levels and judge saturation when applying substantial boosts.

Frequency Response and Noise Performance

With a 1kΩ load, the EQ169S specifies a frequency response within ±0.5dB from 5.4Hz to 25kHz. This extended bandwidth covers the audible spectrum while preserving very low and high-frequency information around the EQ processing.

HLabs specifies a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 105dB at 0.2% THD, supporting use in professional recording and mixing environments where low noise and adequate headroom remain essential.

Professional Studio Connectivity

The EQ169S uses Neutrik XLR connectors for its analogue inputs and outputs. Independent earth-lift controls on each output help engineers resolve ground-loop problems when integrating the equaliser into larger studio systems.

Its internal power system supports 100 to 240V AC at 50 to 60Hz, allowing operation across international mains standards. An optional V-LOCK power cable provides an additional connection-security option.

1U Rackmount Construction

The EQ169S measures 483 x 260 x 44mm and weighs approximately 3.2kg. Its standard 19-inch, 1U format allows straightforward installation in studio racks alongside converters, dynamics processors, microphone preamps and other analogue outboard equipment.

HLabs designs and assembles the EQ169S in Saint-Vérand, France, using components manufactured by partners in France and elsewhere in Europe.

Why Choose the HLabs EQ169S?

  • Bring classic console-style EQ into a modern rack: It provides the broad, musical equalisation associated with the Studer 169 architecture without requiring an original mixing console.
  • Shape stereo sources from one unit: Two channels make it practical for stereo buses, keyboards, drum machines and other paired signals as well as independent mono sources.
  • Make tonal decisions quickly: Two fixed shelves and a continuously variable Presence band provide an intuitive alternative to more complex parametric equalisers.
  • Use it during recording or mixing: Professional headroom, balanced XLR connectivity and low output impedance make the EQ169S suitable for established analogue studio workflows.
  • Compare processing accurately: Relay-operated true bypass simplifies A/B comparisons when judging whether an EQ decision improves the source.
  • Keep an eye on analogue levels: Post-EQ level indication helps engineers monitor signal level as boosts increase output and drive.
  • Integrate it into international studio systems: Universal mains compatibility and independent output earth lifts make installation more flexible.
