The Instruō Seashell is a compact, semi-modular analogue synthesiser that combines tactile hardware with precise, software-driven control, designed for professional sound design, music production, and live performance.
Hardware Specifications
Seashell houses two analogue voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) built on sawtooth core architecture, offering rich and harmonically complex waveforms. It includes an analogue voltage-controlled wavefolder that enhances timbral variation by folding waveforms to create intricate textures. The resonant voltage-controlled low-pass filter allows precise shaping of sound by attenuating high frequencies while emphasising resonant peaks. Internally, waveform routing directs signals to both the filter and wavefolder inputs, facilitating versatile sound shaping directly within the unit. Dual modular-level outputs run in parallel, providing flexible signal distribution. The system supports internal analogue cross frequency modulation (FM), enabling dynamic interaction between oscillators for complex modulation effects. With control voltage (CV) inputs, users can perform self-patching or introduce external modulation sources for greater sonic exploration. A stereo line and headphone output driver ensures high-quality monitoring. Additionally, onboard digital signal processing (DSP) effects offer immediate access to reverbs and delays. The TRS MIDI input provides direct MIDI control, and user-definable CV inputs and outputs allow bespoke modulation configurations. USB type-C connectivity integrates audio and MIDI seamlessly with any digital audio workstation (DAW).
Software-Controlled Capabilities
Seashell extends its flexibility with VST3 and software interface integration, allowing fine-tuned control through high-resolution 14-bit digital manipulation of its analogue components. A customisable scale transposition engine enables detailed tuning adjustments, essential for experimental or microtonal music. Users benefit from total recall, instantly restoring all digitally controlled analogue parameters, streamlining workflow between sessions. Internal low-frequency oscillators (LFOs) serve as additional modulation sources, broadening the range of dynamic sound possibilities. A multi-function envelope generator shapes amplitude and filter contours with precision. The stereo diffusion effect enriches spatial perception, adding depth and dimension. Central to its modulation capability is a 4x4 matrix mixer, controllable via hardware macros for intuitive real-time adjustments. MIDI learn functionality accelerates integration with external controllers, enhancing performance flexibility.
Included Accessories
The Seashell package includes a multi-region power supply suitable for global use, a USB type-C cable for data and power connectivity, a 3.5mm TRS to 5-pin DIN MIDI cable for traditional MIDI interfacing, two 3.5mm TS patch cables for modular connections, and a 3.5mm TRS to dual ¼” TS audio splitter for interfacing with professional audio equipment.
