KMR Audio - McDSP APB-8 Analog Processing Box
8-channel, Thunderbolt 2 and 3 compatible programmable analogue processor that combines high-end analogue circuitry, 32-bit converters, multiple saturation and dynamics circuits, full DAW integration via AAX, AU, and VST3 plug-ins, sample-accurate automation, complete session recall, and a comprehensive plug-in suite included.

The McDSP APB-8 Analog Processing Box is an 8-channel, Thunderbolt-compatible programmable analogue processor that merges the sonic fidelity of high-end analogue hardware with the precision and convenience of a modern digital workflow. Each channel routes audio through real analogue circuitry, controlled in real time by plug-ins within your DAW, with full support for AAX, AU, and VST3 formats on macOS systems.

Hybrid Workflow with True Analogue Processing

Unlike digital emulations, the APB-8 performs all audio processing in the analogue domain using premium analogue components, including multiple saturation stages and dynamic control circuits. Every parameter is controlled directly by software, enabling seamless sample-accurate automation, full session recall, and preset management—all within the DAW environment. Engineers can dial in warmth, punch, and analogue colouration with the precision and repeatability typically reserved for digital plug-ins.

Precision Control, Authentic Character

At the heart of the APB-8 lies a powerful integration of digital control and analogue tone. High-resolution 32-bit digital-to-analogue and analogue-to-digital converters ensure pristine audio fidelity throughout the signal path. Thunderbolt 2 and 3 connectivity ensures high-speed, low-latency data transfer between the unit and host system. Audio enters the APB plug-in, combines with a control signal, and is routed via Thunderbolt to the hardware. The analogue circuitry processes the signal according to the control values, and the result returns digitally to your session in real time. The workflow remains simple, while the results sound unmistakably analogue.

Included APB Plug-ins

The APB-8 includes a growing suite of plug-ins that control the hardware’s analogue circuits directly from your DAW. Each plug-in provides full automation, preset handling, and sample-level timing, and more are being adding as McDSP design them.

  • C673-A – A dynamics processor combining compression with rich analogue saturation

  • El Moo – A variable analogue limiter featuring smooth saturation characteristics

  • MooTube – A tube-based compressor offering classic, soft-knee dynamics control

  • ChickenHead – A bold, aggressive compressor with heavy saturation response

  • L-18 Limiter – A transparent analogue limiter with tonal shaping via Colour control

  • C-18 Compressor – A clean, detailed compressor with level-dependent timing

Streamlined Integration for Professional Studios

The APB-8 eliminates the traditional compromise between analogue sound and digital convenience. With its unique hybrid approach, it offers a DAW-controlled analogue signal path, allowing engineers to automate, save, and recall all processing settings with the speed and accuracy of digital workflows. The included plug-in suite requires no additional licensing or purchase, and an iLok authorisation enables use across compatible macOS systems running Pro Tools 12.x or later, among other DAWs.

How APB Technology Works

Each APB plug-in generates two outputs: the user’s audio signal and a control signal that defines the behaviour of the analogue hardware. Both signals are transmitted via Thunderbolt to the APB-8 unit. The control signal configures the analogue circuitry to match the selected processing algorithm, while the audio signal is processed accordingly. The processed signal is converted back to digital and returned to the DAW, aligned with the session’s timing and automation. The result is true analogue sound, executed with digital precision.

A Future-Proof Analogue Solution

Designed for professional production, mixing, and mastering environments, the McDSP APB-8 sets a new standard for analogue integration. It combines the warmth and character of traditional outboard gear with the speed, control, and reliability of modern digital systems—without compromise.
