The Modal COBALT8M is a rackmountable 8-voice extended virtual-analogue synthesiser module featuring 64 high-resolution oscillators, 40 complex algorithms, 31 filter types, three audio-rate LFOs, MPE compatibility, and an advanced sequencer/arpeggiator, all housed in a professional-grade desktop or 19” rack-ready enclosure.

Extended Virtual-Analogue Synthesis Engine

The COBALT8M redefines the virtual-analogue synthesis paradigm by fusing classic analogue-style warmth with cutting-edge digital architecture. It features two independent oscillator groups, each with up to four oscillators per voice, totalling 64 high-resolution virtual-analogue oscillators. These groups generate traditional waveforms including sine, saw, triangle, and pulse, while offering access to 40 bespoke algorithms. These include waveform morphing, pulse-width modulation, ring modulation, oscillator sync, bit crushing, filtered noise, and smooth crossfading between waveform shapes. Extended oscillator drift adds subtle instability for a more vintage tone. Each algorithm incorporates intuitive dual-control parameters for direct manipulation of complex synthesis techniques without requiring deep menu diving.

Sophisticated Filtering Capabilities

The COBALT8M provides a comprehensive filter section that includes 31 resonant filter types. These cover a wide range of sonic applications from classic subtractive shaping to experimental sound design. Users can deploy 2-pole state-variable filters with morphable characteristics or 4-pole ladder filters with drive for aggressive saturation. Multiple variants of low-pass, band-pass, high-pass and notch-filter combinations ensure extreme versatility. The filter section also includes dual cutoff scaling modes, allowing precise control over tonal balance and harmonics shaping. This architecture supports advanced timbre manipulation, far exceeding traditional analogue filters in scope and depth.

Advanced Modulation Architecture

Three envelope generators—dedicated to amplitude, filter, and modulation—support complex dynamic shaping. The modulation and filter envelopes also offer negative polarity for inverted modulation responses. COBALT8M also includes three LFOs: two polyphonic audio-rate LFOs and one global LFO. These can be tempo-synced to internal or external clocks and provide seven waveforms for rhythmic modulation. The modulation matrix offers 12 sources and 55 destinations, supporting eight user-assignable slots and four pre-defined routings for frequently used modulation paths. This enables deep, evolving patches with intricate modulation behaviour.

Integrated Sequencer and Arpeggiator

COBALT8M incorporates a 512-note polyphonic real-time and step sequencer with four animation lanes, enabling the capture and editing of parameter automation in both performance and programming contexts. The step sequencer allows up to 64 steps with eight-note polyphony per step and supports multiple playback modes including gate and rest functions. The onboard programmable arpeggiator spans up to 32 steps and offers 2048-step cycles before looping. Features such as chord hold, inversion, transposition, and sustain latch make it a powerful compositional and performance tool.

Performance Interface and Control

The control surface features 13 switched encoders, 13 additional encoders, nine function buttons, and a four-axis joystick assignable to a broad range of modulation destinations. The joystick can be locked to maintain a modulation position, ideal for live manipulation. Performance modes include mono, polyphonic, and various unison and stack options (2, 4, or 8 voices), supporting flexible voicing strategies. Glide/portamento includes legato and staccato modes. The chord inversion control allows the creation of harmonically varied chord structures with ease.

Professional FX Engine

COBALT8M includes a three-slot stereo FX engine with 26 high-quality algorithms. These include chorus, phaser, flanger, tremolo, rotary speaker simulation, ping-pong and crossover delays, reverb, lo-fi effects, drive, compressor, and EQ. Each slot offers detailed parameter editing to sculpt effects precisely. The FX engine enhances both live and studio applications, ensuring that the output remains polished and performance-ready.

Hardware Integration and Connectivity

The unit features full-sized MIDI DIN input and output ports, USB-MIDI connectivity (class-compliant), and 3.5 mm analogue sync inputs and outputs for integrating with modular and semi-modular gear. Audio connections include dual mono 6.35 mm outputs, a 6.35 mm headphone output, and a 3.5 mm stereo audio input. Dedicated 6.35 mm inputs for sustain and expression pedals allow external performance control. Users can poly-chain a second COBALT8M unit to expand the system to 16 voices and 128 oscillators.

Memory and Patch Management

COBALT8M supports 500 user patch slots, with 300 factory patches pre-loaded by professional sound designers. An additional 100 sequencer presets and 100 FX configurations can be linked to any patch for seamless performance integration. Eight quick-recall slots enable instant access to favourite patches during live sets or fast-paced sessions.

Construction and Display

The chassis is constructed from steel and aluminium, delivering roadworthy durability. Its tabletop format fits comfortably in studio environments, and the included rackmount brackets allow 19” 3U rack installation (1U spacing required above). A high-contrast 1.54-inch OLED display provides clear visual feedback during sound design, editing, and performance.

Power and Compatibility

The synthesiser runs on a 9V DC, 1.5A centre-positive power supply. The free MODALapp editor, compatible with macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, VST3, and AU, enables full parameter access, patch management, firmware updates, and deep sound sculpting via desktop or mobile devices.

With its advanced synthesis architecture, robust modulation framework, powerful sequencing capabilities, and professional-grade build quality, the Modal COBALT8M stands as a comprehensive sound design instrument. Ideal for both studio production and live performance, it delivers an expansive palette of virtual-analogue textures unmatched in its class.
