The Modal COBALT8X is an extended 8-voice virtual-analogue synthesiser featuring 64 high-resolution oscillators, a 61-note premium FATAR keybed with aftertouch, 40 unique oscillator algorithms, 31 filter types, and an extensive suite of modulation, sequencing, performance, and effects tools, all housed in a durable steel and aluminium chassis.
Extended Virtual-Analogue Synthesis Redefined
COBALT8X builds on the legacy of classic analogue synthesisers, but reinvents their aesthetic with a digitally-driven architecture designed for today’s music production environments. It harnesses two independent oscillator groups, each with up to four oscillators, capable of generating a wide range of traditional and modern tones using 40 sophisticated algorithms. These include classic sync and ring modulation, waveform morphing, PWM, filtered noise, bit crushing and other complex synthesis techniques—each controllable through an intuitive dual-parameter interface tailored to the specific algorithm.
Powerful Filter Architecture
The synthesiser’s filter section provides over 30 filter types, including 2-pole state-variable and 4-pole ladder designs. These filters offer a wide array of sonic possibilities from traditional subtractive shaping to highly experimental sound design. Modal has included lowpass, bandpass, highpass and notch filters with drive control and morphable characteristics, enabling nuanced sculpting of the sound spectrum.
Advanced Modulation System
COBALT8X includes three audio-rate LFOs (two polyphonic, one global), each syncable to tempo, and three independent envelopes for filter, amplifier and modulation control. The modulation system features 12 modulation sources and 55 destinations across a 12-slot matrix, with four preconfigured routings for convenience. These modulation pathways empower deep, evolving textures and dynamic responsiveness to performance gestures.
Comprehensive Sequencing and Arpeggiation Tools
The onboard 512-note real-time and step sequencer allows four lanes of parameter animation, ideal for complex melodic and rhythmic pattern construction. Additionally, a 64-step polyphonic step sequencer provides step input for notes and modulation. The built-in 32-step programmable arpeggiator supports up to 2048 steps before repetition, with performance controls such as chord hold, sustain latch, inversions, gate modes, rests, and real-time transposition.
Performance-Focused Design
The 61-key FATAR keybed supports velocity and channel aftertouch for expressive playability. Players can assign modulation to a four-axis joystick and engage multiple keyboard modes including mono, polyphonic, unison (2/4/8), and stacked configurations (2/4). Glide and portamento functions, including legato and staccato modes, further enhance expressiveness. MPE compatibility enables polyphonic control and expression on a per-note basis using supported MIDI controllers.
Professional Audio and Connectivity Options
COBALT8X integrates seamlessly into studio and live setups with full-size MIDI DIN in/out, class-compliant USB MIDI, dual 1/4" line outputs, a 1/4" headphone output, 3.5 mm stereo audio input, and 3.5 mm sync I/O for analogue gear. Expression and sustain pedal inputs are included, and poly-chaining with another COBALT8 unit allows up to 16-voice polyphony and 128 oscillators.
Integrated FX and Memory Management
Three independent stereo FX engines offer 26 high-quality algorithms including reverb, delay (stereo, ping-pong, X-over), chorus, flanger, phaser, rotary, tremolo, LoFi, EQ, and compression. The COBALT8X holds 500 patch memories, 300 of which are factory-loaded by expert sound designers. Additionally, it provides storage for 100 FX presets, 100 sequencer presets, and eight Quick Recall slots for live performance readiness.
MODALapp Editor for In-Depth Sound Design
The free MODALapp editor, available for macOS, Windows, iOS, Android and as a VST3/AU plugin, offers detailed visual editing of all synthesis parameters and seamless patch and sequence management. It allows for deep integration into any DAW-based production workflow.
Technical Specifications
Measuring 885 mm x 300 mm x 100 mm and weighing 9 kg, the COBALT8X features a rugged steel-aluminium build with stained bamboo end cheeks, powered via DC-9.0V (1.5A centre-positive). A 1.54-inch OLED display provides real-time visual feedback for all parameters.
