Hands-On Performance Control
The performance-focused design features essential controls directly on the front panel, allowing musicians to interact intuitively without navigating complex menus during live performances.
The Modal ELEMENT One is an 8-voice virtual-analog synthesizer featuring 64 high-resolution oscillators, 37 full-size aftertouch-enabled keys, 31 resonant filter types, three configurable stereo effects engines, extensive modulation capabilities, a performance-focused control surface, and deep software integration designed to deliver expressive sound design without complex programming.
Modal Electronics developed ELEMENT One in collaboration with Hartmann Design to create a synthesizer that prioritises immediacy, musical interaction and hands-on performance. Rather than relying on deep menu structures, ELEMENT One places essential controls directly on the front panel through 17 endless encoders, dedicated function buttons and a highly expressive four-axis joystick.
The premium 37-note keyboard provides velocity sensitivity and channel aftertouch, allowing performers to shape dynamics, timbre and modulation directly from their playing technique. Four assignable performance controls offer instant access to key parameters, while the joystick enables complex modulation movements that remain intuitive during live performance.
At the heart of ELEMENT One sits an advanced virtual-analogue architecture with true 8-voice polyphony and 64 high-resolution oscillators. Each voice can utilise up to eight oscillators, creating everything from classic analogue-style sounds to complex evolving textures.
Two independent oscillator groups generate sine, triangle, pulse and sawtooth waveforms alongside 34 waveform algorithms. These algorithms include oscillator synchronisation, ring modulation, pulse-width modulation, oscillator morphing, bit crushing and filtered noise generation. Vintage modelling parameters and oscillator drift controls further enhance the character and authenticity of analogue-inspired sounds.
ELEMENT One features 31 resonant filter types, including both static and morphable designs. The filter section provides extensive tonal shaping options, ranging from traditional subtractive synthesis techniques to more experimental sound manipulation.
Cutoff scaling offers two distinctive operating modes, allowing users to tailor filter behaviour to different performance and programming requirements. The wide filter selection enables precise sound sculpting across basses, leads, pads, textures and effects.
The synthesizer incorporates three dedicated envelope generators for amplifier, filter and modulation duties. Users can access each envelope independently or adjust all three simultaneously for rapid sound creation. Reverse envelope functionality expands creative possibilities for both filter and modulation destinations.
Three audio-rate LFOs provide additional movement and animation, with two operating per voice and one globally across the instrument. Seven waveform shapes, tempo synchronisation and a flexible routing structure support complex modulation schemes.
Eight assignable modulation slots work alongside four fixed routings, providing access to 12 modulation sources and 55 destinations. This architecture delivers substantial programming depth while maintaining an accessible workflow.
ELEMENT One includes a programmable 32-step arpeggiator with rest functionality and sequence lengths of up to 2048 steps before repetition. The arpeggiator supports intricate rhythmic patterns, evolving sequences and performance-driven musical ideas.
Multiple keyboard modes include Poly, Mono, Unison 2, Unison 4, Unison 8, Stack 2 and Stack 4 configurations. Glide and portamento functions support both legato and staccato playing styles, further enhancing performance flexibility.
The onboard effects section comprises three fully configurable stereo processors that users can arrange in any signal-chain order. Available effects include chorus, phaser, positive and negative flanger variants, tremolo, rotary speaker simulation, LoFi processing, stereo delay, ping-pong delay, crossover delay and reverb.
This flexible architecture enables complex multi-effect processing without external hardware and allows performers to create polished production-ready sounds directly within the synthesizer.
ELEMENT One provides storage for 500 fully editable patches and ships with 300 factory programmes organised into convenient categories for rapid browsing. Compatibility with thousands of COBALT8 patches significantly expands the available sound library.
The instrument also stores 100 sequences and 100 effects presets. Eight Quick Recall slots offer immediate access to favourite sounds directly from the front panel, streamlining both studio and live workflows.
Designed for modern production environments, ELEMENT One includes MIDI DIN input and output, class-compliant USB-C MIDI connectivity, analogue clock synchronisation and stereo audio processing capabilities.
The stereo audio input allows external instruments, drum machines and audio sources to utilise the synthesizer's internal effects engines. Additional connections include sustain and expression pedal inputs, stereo outputs and a dedicated headphone output.
The free MODALapp software extends the hardware experience across macOS, Windows, iOS and Android platforms. The software provides comprehensive patch editing, library management and firmware updating functions through an intuitive graphical interface.
MODALplugin integration enables direct access to ELEMENT One within DAW environments through VST3 and AU formats, creating a seamless workflow between hardware performance and software production.
