Expressive Performance Control
Polyphonic aftertouch and touch strips allow for detailed articulation and dynamic modulation, enhancing the expressiveness of each note played on the synthesizer.
The Modor NF-1k is a 49-key, polyphonic aftertouch digital synthesizer featuring a dual-engine architecture, 16-voice polyphony, 2-part multitimbrality, advanced touch control surfaces, and an expanded performance system built on the original NF-1 sound engine.
The NF-1k integrates a high-quality Fatar keyboard with 49 weighted keys, delivering a responsive playing experience across four full octaves. Polyphonic aftertouch allows each note to respond independently to pressure, enabling detailed articulation and dynamic modulation per voice. A 50 cm touch strip provides precise pitch control, while two additional 10 cm touch strips handle modulation and assignable CC3 data, offering immediate, tactile performance interaction beyond traditional wheels.
The instrument builds on the original NF-1 synthesis engine while introducing a newly developed voice board that expands polyphony to 16 voices. This architecture supports 2-part multitimbrality, allowing two independent patches to run simultaneously. Users can layer sounds for increased complexity, split the keyboard for performance versatility, or sequence each part independently via MIDI. The system allocates voices flexibly, either as an 8+8 split or dedicating all 16 voices to a single patch.
The NF-1k retains the distinctive sonic identity of the original NF-1, driven by unconventional digital oscillators and highly musical filter designs. These elements generate complex harmonic content and unique tonal movement, making the instrument particularly suited to experimental, evolving textures as well as structured melodic work.
A fully programmable arpeggiator enhances rhythmic creativity, offering multiple playback modes including Up, Down, Up and Down, Programmed sequences, and Random patterns. MIDI synchronisation ensures tight integration with external systems. The chord mode simplifies harmonic performance by mapping complex chords to single keys, while the hold function sustains notes or sequences for hands-free manipulation. Unison mode thickens sounds by stacking voices with adjustable detune and stereo spread, creating wide, immersive textures.
The synthesizer stores 448 patches across 14 banks, each containing 32 sounds. It also provides 64 setup slots, each storing two complete patches alongside arpeggiator, chord, and unison configurations. Users can overwrite all factory presets, allowing full customisation of the instrument’s sonic library.
The NF-1k supports comprehensive connectivity for studio and stage use. It includes MIDI In, Thru, and Out via 5-pin DIN, alongside class-compliant USB MIDI for direct integration with modern systems without driver installation. Audio outputs include stereo left and right jacks and a front-panel headphone output. Pedal inputs accommodate sustain and expression control, enabling further performance shaping.
The front panel provides immediate access to sound design through 43 rotary knobs, 28 pushbuttons, and a rotary encoder. This layout prioritises hands-on control, allowing users to shape and manipulate sounds in real time without menu dependency.
