In a time when many microphones are engineered to impart a particular sonic character, there remains a demand for faithful reproduction of original acoustic events without any added alterations. This is precisely where the Neumann Series 180, of which the KM 184 is a part, comes into play.

The Neumann Series 180 encompasses three distinct members, each offering different pickup patterns: the KM 183 (omnidirectional), KM 184 (cardioid), and KM 185 (hypercardioid). This comprehensive array caters to the majority of stage and studio requirements. Additionally, the non-modular design of the Series 180 microphones renders them cost-effective compared to their modular counterparts, the Series KM A and KM D, which boast a wide array of interchangeable capsule heads for analogue and digital output stages.

Despite its competitive pricing, the KM 184 doesn't compromise on Neumann's hallmark engineering excellence. The cardioid pattern remains frequency-independent, delivering exceptional rearward sound rejection, even at lower frequencies. During practical use, the microphone ensures a natural, colouration-free pickup angle, proving invaluable in multi-microphone setups and for precise stereo and surround sound imaging. Its frequency response maintains a smooth and linear profile, with a subtle treble lift around 9 kHz, adding a touch of brilliance to the recordings. The innovative transformerless head amplifier boasts an impressive dynamic range of 125 dB while meticulously preserving the capsule's sonic integrity. Moreover, the KM 184 exhibits an impressively low self-noise of only 13 dB-A and can handle high sound pressure levels of up to 138 dB without introducing distortion. The microphone's low impedance output stage also enables audio transmission over long cable runs, reaching up to 300 meters (1000 feet) without any loss in quality.

The versatility of the KM 184 makes it a universal microphone fit for studio and stage applications. Its transparent sound quality perfectly captures the nuances of various acoustic instruments, such as piano, percussion, drums, acoustic guitar, upright bass, violin, cello, woodwinds, and brass. Whether recording soloists or ensembles, the KM 184 excels, thanks to its exceptional off-axis behaviour, making it an ideal choice for stereo and surround sound recording tasks, offering impeccable imaging capabilities. While not explicitly optimized for the human voice, the microphone is often employed in classical vocal recordings where sonic authenticity is paramount. Furthermore, its compact size ensures it remains visually unobtrusive, making it well-suited for television and radio applications.
