The Neutral Labs Scrooge is a 42 HP Eurorack module and semi-modular desktop synthesiser designed to generate sequences of malfunctioning, distorted, and glitch-ridden sounds. It incorporates five fully analogue voices that rely on unique circuitry, drawing power directly from sequencer control signals rather than a dedicated power supply. This unconventional design imbues the voices with an organic, unstable character while allowing the unit to function passively when sequenced externally.
Analogue Voices and Routing
Scrooge features five distinct analogue voices engineered to produce a range of sonic textures, from fragmented crackles to heavily distorted growls. Although capable of generating percussive elements like kick drums, hi-hats, and snares, it thrives in chaotic and unpredictable sound design. Each voice includes an individual output and can be routed to one of two main outputs, both of which support headphones. Additionally, dedicated CV inputs for each voice respond effectively to audio-rate modulation, expanding its sound-shaping potential.
Modulation Capabilities
Two independent modulation tracks provide further depth, with each track assignable to different voices. External modulation sources can be introduced via two dedicated CV inputs, offering dynamic control over sound parameters. The inclusion of a CV slew limiter per track ensures smooth transitions between modulation values, enhancing expressive control.
Advanced Step Sequencing
The onboard step sequencer supports up to 64 steps per track, with fully adjustable step lengths, allowing complex and evolving patterns. Parameter locking per step enables precise modulation of key sound elements, while the "control all" function allows simultaneous adjustments across multiple steps and tracks, optimising real-time performance. A generative algorithm introduces random variations into existing patterns or constructs entirely new sequences, making it a powerful tool for improvisation. Users can chain up to 32 patterns and store a total of 128 patterns across 16 banks, providing extensive recall options.
Synchronisation and External Control
Scrooge seamlessly integrates with external gear through its MIDI input (TRS Type A), sync output, and sync/reset inputs, ensuring tight timing with other devices. It can function as a sequencer for external synthesisers, offering extensive connectivity for hybrid setups. Microtiming adjustments allow for precise rhythmic variations, pushing the boundaries of traditional step sequencing.
Designed for performers and sound designers who embrace sonic unpredictability, the Neutral Labs Scrooge is a versatile and unconventional tool that merges analogue instability with advanced sequencing capabilities, making it a unique addition to any modular setup.
