Powerful Polyphonic Synthesis in a Compact Eurorack Module

The OXI Coral combines eight independent synthesis voices with a versatile selection of sound engines, allowing musicians and sound designers to create everything from rich polyphonic pads and evolving textures to analogue-style basses, expressive leads and synthesised percussion.

Drawing inspiration from Mutable Instruments' Plaits, Coral expands the concept of a multi-engine synthesiser with extensive polyphony, flexible voice allocation and integrated effects. Its compact 14HP design provides substantial synthesis capabilities without occupying excessive rack space.

Each voice supports up to eight oscillators, giving Coral a maximum of 64 oscillators across its eight voices. Musicians can configure the module for monophonic or polyphonic performance, while its multitimbral architecture allows several independent sounds to operate simultaneously.

27 Versatile Sound Engines with Firmware 3.0

Coral firmware 3.0 expands the module's synthesis capabilities to 27 sound engines, introducing six new options: FMX7, ACID 2, OB-VA, String 2, PianoZ and Stitcher.

The extensive engine collection covers virtual analogue, wavetable, FM, additive, physical modelling, sample playback and percussion synthesis. Classic analogue-inspired options include three-oscillator Moog-style synthesis, SH-101 sounds, virtual analogue oscillators and the new OB-VA engine.

For digital synthesis, Coral offers dual-oscillator wavetable synthesis, custom wavetable support, wavetable swarms, waveshaping, additive synthesis with distortion and two-operator FM. The new FMX7 engine extends its frequency modulation capabilities with DX7-style synthesis.

String and String 2 provide string-based synthesis, while PianoZ introduces additional keyboard-oriented timbres. Dedicated bass drum, snare and hi-hat engines support electronic percussion, alongside modal synthesis, particle noise and filtered noise for experimental sound design.

The new Stitcher engine specialises in drone synthesis, complementing firmware 3.0's dedicated Drone mode for sustained and evolving textures.

Coral supports up to ten loaded engines at a time. The Firmware Updater allows users to select their preferred engines and generate a customised firmware configuration. Engine Memory and additional workflow improvements further streamline sound creation and performance.

Eight Voices with Flexible Multitimbral Operation

Coral's multitimbral architecture allows its eight voices to form independent parts, enabling several instruments to operate within a single Eurorack module.

Each part features its own synthesis engine, filter, amplifier, envelope, effects send and pan control. This arrangement allows Coral to combine basslines, chords, melodies and percussion within a single patch, making it particularly useful for compact modular systems and complex sequenced arrangements.

Flexible voice allocation supports both monophonic and polyphonic applications, from individual synthesiser voices to layered, multi-part compositions.

Integrated Reverb, Chorus and Delay Effects

Coral includes onboard reverb, chorus and delay, reducing the need for additional external effects modules.

Individual effects sends for each voice provide control over the spatial character of different sounds. Reverb adds depth and ambience, chorus creates movement and width, while delay introduces rhythmic repeats and evolving echoes.

These effects allow multiple parts to occupy distinct positions within a mix while keeping the signal chain compact.

Comprehensive MIDI, MPE and CV Integration

Coral combines MIDI connectivity with traditional Eurorack control, making it suitable for hybrid hardware systems and fully modular setups.

Its MIDI implementation supports parameter control through MIDI CC messages, including effects sends and sample selection. This enables external sequencers and controllers to automate synthesis parameters and create evolving arrangements.

MPE compatibility adds per-note expression across all eight voices when paired with a suitable controller, providing more detailed control over polyphonic performances.

Coral also features a 1V/Oct CV input and trigger input for integration with modular sequencers and control sources. Its TRS MIDI connection supports both Type A and Type B adaptors.

When paired with the OXI One or another polyphonic MIDI sequencer, Coral can sequence multiple voices and parts independently.

Sample Playback and Patch Storage

The WavPlayer engine expands Coral's synthesis capabilities with custom audio sample playback.

It supports WAV files at 32kHz, 44.1kHz and 48kHz without a specified sample-duration limit, allowing users to incorporate recorded instruments, percussion, textures and other audio material into modular compositions.

Coral also provides 100 patch memory slots, allowing musicians to store and recall sounds for studio production and live performance.

OXI Coral in VCV Rack

OXI Instruments also offers Coral as a software module for VCV Rack, providing a virtual counterpart to the hardware synthesiser.

The software version reproduces the hardware's synthesis architecture and includes engines such as FMX7, Dual Wavetable and OB-VA. This allows musicians to explore Coral's synthesis capabilities within a computer-based modular environment.

The VCV Rack version costs USD 30 through the VCV Library and forms part of the VCV+ subscription. OXI distributes the software version separately from the hardware module.
