The PMC PMC10 XBD is a dual-cabinet, three-way active reference monitoring system delivering 3.6kW of DSP-controlled power with extended low-frequency headroom, ATL™ loading and LaminairX™ airflow technology for large-format music, film and immersive studios.

Overview

The PMC10 XBD represents the most advanced configuration of the PMC10 platform, combining a full three-way active main cabinet with a dedicated bass extension cabinet. This design increases acoustic output, improves low-frequency authority and preserves PMC’s signature time-aligned accuracy. The system integrates classic PMC transmission line principles with modern DSP optimisation and high-power Class-D amplification to meet the demands of contemporary stereo and immersive production environments.

Driver and Cabinet Architecture

The primary cabinet houses a 34mm soft-dome tweeter and the PMC75v3 midrange driver, both mounted on a rotatable baffle to support vertical or horizontal orientation. PMC integrates a-void™ damping to suppress internal resonances and n-compass™ waveguide geometry to maintain consistent dispersion and phase coherence. Low frequencies rely on a custom 10-inch bass driver designed specifically for PMC’s ATL™ cabinet structure with LaminairX™ venting, which reduces turbulence and increases efficiency at high output levels.

The XBD cabinet contains an identical 10-inch bass driver wired in parallel with the main system bass unit. This configuration doubles effective low-frequency radiating area, increases headroom and delivers greater physical scale without sacrificing transient control. Engineers can stack the cabinets vertically or horizontally or mount them side by side in soffit installations, enabling flexible deployment in large rooms.

Amplification and DSP Control

PMC powers the entire system with the master36 DSP and amplifier unit. The amplifier section delivers 800W each to the tweeter and midrange drivers and 1000W to each bass driver, producing a total system output of 3600W per channel. Class-D amplification ensures high efficiency and thermal stability while maintaining transparency.

The DSP engine provides precision crossover management tailored to the PMC10 driver set, excursion limiting for driver protection and full room-alignment equalisation. Engineers can calibrate the system through SoundAlign2 using a browser-based interface over standard LAN control. The system supports analogue and digital input formats up to 192kHz, allowing seamless integration with modern studio infrastructure.

Physical Design and Installation

Each cabinet measures 770mm high, 355mm wide and 420mm deep with an additional 10mm for the low-frequency driver surround. The main three-way cabinet weighs 52kg and the XBD bass cabinet weighs 42kg. The effective ATL™ length reaches 7.2 metres across both cabinets, enabling controlled bass extension and consistent phase response at high sound pressure levels.

An illuminated front logo communicates system status and reinforces operational visibility in dark control rooms. The rotatable driver panel supports symmetrical dispersion regardless of cabinet orientation, preserving stereo imaging and immersive field accuracy.
