The Rupert Neve Designs Portico II Master Buss Processor Plug-In is a software recreation of RND's flagship stereo dynamics and tone processor, combining dual-channel compression, limiting, stereo field control, width and depth processing, side-chain filtering, blend control and the harmonic character associated with Rupert Neve's transformer-based analogue designs in a native AAX, AU and VST3 format.

Rupert Neve Designs Portico II Master Buss Processor Plug-In

Developed by Rupert Neve Designs in collaboration with McDSP, the Portico II Master Buss Processor Plug-In brings the functionality and sonic character of the acclaimed hardware Master Buss Processor into a modern DAW environment. The original hardware uses Rupert Neve-designed input and output transformers, a high-voltage 72V topology and mastering-grade controls to deliver precise dynamics processing, tone shaping and stereo image control.

The plug-in recreates the core processing architecture of the hardware while taking advantage of the flexibility available in software. It gives mixing, mastering and production engineers access to dual-channel compression, limiting and stereo field manipulation without requiring external analogue routing or dedicated rack hardware.

Dual-Channel Compression

The Portico II Master Buss Processor centres on two fully featured compressor sections that can process stereo or dual-mono material with extensive control over dynamic response.

Ratio and threshold controls determine how strongly the compressor responds to the incoming signal, while attack and release parameters shape how quickly gain reduction reacts and recovers. These controls allow the processor to move from subtle buss cohesion to more assertive dynamic control.

A side-chain high-pass filter prevents excessive low-frequency energy from dominating the compressor detector. This helps preserve bass weight and low-end punch when processing full mixes, drum buses or other sources with substantial low-frequency content.

Make-up gain compensates for level reduction after compression, while the blend control combines compressed and uncompressed signals for parallel processing. This makes it possible to increase density and consistency while retaining transient definition.

Transparent Limiting

The Master Buss Processor also includes a highly transparent limiter designed for controlled peak management without sacrificing musicality.

Its Adaptive Release Technology uses multiple release-time characteristics to respond differently according to the source material. Fast transient information such as snare attacks can trigger a rapid response, while longer and slower signals such as bass notes receive a more gradual release characteristic.

This adaptive behaviour allows the limiter to control peaks while maintaining a natural envelope, making it suitable for mix buss, mastering and other applications where excessive pumping or obvious gain reduction would prove undesirable.

Stereo Field Editor

The Portico II Master Buss Processor extends conventional mid-side processing through its Stereo Field Editor, giving engineers detailed control over perceived width, ambience and front-to-back positioning.

The Width control adjusts the lateral stereo image, allowing the processor to move from narrower or mono-compatible presentation towards a wider stereo field. This can also influence the perceived amount of ambience and spatial information within the recording.

The Depth control adjusts the relationship between centre-focused and supporting elements. Centre-panned material such as lead vocals, bass or solo instruments can move forward or backward relative to the surrounding stereo content, providing a powerful way to reshape spatial perspective without conventional level automation.

Corresponding band-pass filters help focus Width and Depth processing on selected parts of the frequency spectrum. This allows engineers to alter spatial information with greater precision rather than applying the same stereo treatment across the entire signal.

Transformer Character and Portico II Architecture

The original hardware uses input and output transformers designed by Rupert Neve together with a high-voltage 72V signal path. This architecture contributes substantial headroom, low noise and the harmonic character associated with Rupert Neve Designs analogue circuitry.

The plug-in translates the character and behaviour of the hardware into software, making the Portico II Master Buss Processor's dynamics, tone and stereo manipulation tools available directly inside a DAW session.

This combination of precision and analogue-inspired character makes the processor suitable for subtle mastering adjustments, stereo buss enhancement, stem processing and more creative dynamic shaping.

Flexible Buss and Mastering Processing

The Portico II Master Buss Processor works effectively across complete mixes, stereo buses, stems and individual stereo sources. Its compressor can create cohesion and manage dynamic range, while the limiter controls excessive peaks and the Stereo Field Editor reshapes width and depth.

The ability to combine these functions within one processor reduces the need for separate compression, limiting and stereo imaging plug-ins. Engineers can move from subtle correction to more creative tonal and spatial processing while keeping the signal chain focused and consistent.

Native DAW Integration

The Rupert Neve Designs Portico II Master Buss Processor Plug-In supports AAX, AU and VST3 formats and integrates with compatible DAWs including Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase, Nuendo, FL Studio, Ableton Live, LUNA, Reaper, Sonar and Studio One.

The plug-in runs natively on Intel and Apple silicon processors, allowing compatible computer-based systems to use the processor without dedicated DSP hardware.

iLok Authorisation

The Master Buss Processor Plug-In supports iLok 2 and iLok 3 USB Smart Keys, machine-based authorisation and iLok Cloud sessions through an iLok License Manager account.

Each licence provides two activations, making it practical for engineers who work across more than one compatible production system.

Why Choose the Rupert Neve Designs Portico II Master Buss Processor Plug-In?

  • Brings compression, limiting and stereo image control together in one processor, helping create a more focused and efficient mix buss or mastering chain.
