The Slate Digital VMS-ML-1A is a sonically neutral, large-diaphragm condenser microphone engineered to deliver ultra-linear performance with high SPL handling and exceptionally low self-noise.

Hardware and Design

The ML-1A features a cardioid polar pattern with a 1-inch capsule, offering a frequency response from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. With an output impedance of 50 ohms, sensitivity rated at -32.5 dB, and a signal-to-noise ratio of 86 dB, it ensures accurate, high-fidelity sound capture. Designed for studio environments, it operates on phantom power and is equipped with a three-position pad switch (0 dB, -10 dB, -20 dB), enabling it to handle sound pressure levels up to 145 dB. Its physical build comprises a black and grey 200 mm by 50 mm cylindrical chassis weighing 450 grams, with a re-engineered grille for both form and function.

Virtual Microphone System

The ML-1A integrates with Slate Digital’s new Virtual Microphone System plugin, which houses a streamlined collection of microphone models within a single software environment. This VMS plugin offers advanced tools such as microphone model morphing, enabling users to blend the sonic characteristics of two distinct microphone emulations. A proximity slider allows fine control over the natural low-end boost that occurs when placing a mic close to a source, while a low-frequency roll-off selector eliminates unwanted rumble. Additionally, the mono-to-stereo widener provides spatial enhancement for background vocals and other stereo elements.

Included Microphone Models and Packs

Included with the ML-1A are licences for the Radio France Signature Mic Pack, Classic Tubes 1 and 2, and the Virtual Preamp Collection. The Radio France pack introduces ten meticulously modelled microphones, including France's iconic RF-21B field mic, the immense RF-42B ribbon microphones in both Voice and Music configurations, and the RF-X25 known for its open-air tonal profile. The Classic Tubes collections cover studio-standard emulations such as the FG-47, FG-800, and FG-251. The Virtual Preamp Collection adds characterful analogue-style preamp emulations FG-73 and FG-76, offering tonal shaping flexibility.

Software Compatibility and System Requirements

The VMS plugin is compatible with major formats including AAX, AU, VST2, and VST3, and supports macOS 11 or later and Windows 10 or later. All microphone models and plugin functionality are included in Slate Digital’s Complete Access Bundle, with a three-month trial subscription provided upon purchase of the ML-1A.
