Bus Comp Classic brings the sound, response and focused workflow of the legendary SSL Bus Compressor into a dedicated rackmount processor. It draws on more than five decades of SSL compression heritage, delivering the punch, movement and cohesion that help individual elements form a finished mix. SSL designs and builds the unit, combining its established analogue architecture with contemporary precision, consistency and reliability.

Authentic SSL Compression

High-performance THAT 2181 VCAs handle the audio path, while SSL’s distinctive side-chain architecture incorporates a further VCA within its feedback loop. This combination shapes the compressor’s characteristic response, controlling transients while encouraging instruments to move and breathe together.

Subtle gain reduction adds cohesion to stereo mixes, while stronger compression brings greater density and urgency to drums, stems and parallel processing chains.

Variable VCA Drive: Different Eras of SSL

Variable VCA Drive provides continuous control over the compressor’s harmonic character. At its cleanest setting, the audio VCAs operate in a balanced configuration, delivering the low distortion and powerful transient response associated with SSL’s SuperAnalogue™ designs, from the 9000 Series to Oracle and Odyssey consoles.

Activating VCA Drive switches the VCAs into an unbalanced configuration, recreating the harmonic behaviour of classic SSL designs such as the FX384 and 4000 Series. Increasing the control adds progressively stronger colour and saturation, moving from subtle console-style richness towards the denser, more aggressive character of early 4K designs.

With drive approaching 10% total harmonic distortion, Bus Comp Classic covers clean mix finishing, coloured instrument processing and heavily saturated drum or parallel compression.

Classic Control, Greater Musicality

Precision six-position stepped controls for Ratio, Attack and Release retain the familiar SSL settings while adding ratio and release options. These controls support fast adjustment, accurate recall and repeatable results without complicating the classic workflow.

Each ratio delivers a distinct compression response. The 2:1 setting uses an exceptionally gentle soft knee, introducing gain reduction progressively for transparent mix bus control. Higher ratios apply increasingly assertive compression, adding density to instrument groups, drum buses and parallel chains.

SSL Auto Release uses programme-dependent, two-stage circuitry to adapt recovery to the material. Louder elements release more quickly, while quieter material recovers more gradually. This behaviour maintains movement and detail across complex arrangements.

Modern Side-Chain Control

A precision six-position side-chain high-pass filter reduces the influence of low-frequency material on the detector. This helps kick drums and bass retain depth and impact while limiting excessive gain reduction across the wider mix.

The genuine stereo external side-chain input supports creative compression and advanced stem delivery. During stem printing, the complete mix can feed the side-chain while individual stems pass through the audio path. Each stem then follows the compression behaviour of the full mix, helping preserve the balance and movement of the approved production across alternate versions.
