SPL Pre One

The SPL Pre One is a dual-channel microphone preamplifier equipped with discrete technology, offering two preamps with a transparent and open sound, Hi-Z instrument input, adjustable gain from +8 dB to +62 dB, 48V phantom power, phase reverse function, high-pass filter, analogue EQ presets (Flair and Contour), balanced line outputs, and a professional-grade power supply for outstanding sound performance.

Discrete Preamplifiers

The SPL Pre One includes two preamplifiers designed with a discrete architecture to deliver exceptional sound quality. This configuration ensures an open and transparent sound characteristic. The first preamplifier features a microphone input, while the second offers both a microphone input and a Hi-Z instrument input. This dual functionality allows users to connect instruments such as electric guitars or basses, making the Pre One versatile for a range of recording scenarios. Both preamps mirror the technical and sonic quality of the acclaimed SPL Channel One Mk3.

Gain Control

The gain control enables precise adjustment of the preamplification level, with a range from +8 dB to +62 dB. This extensive range ensures compatibility with demanding microphones, allowing them to perform at their best. A green signal LED indicates the presence of an input signal, providing clear visual feedback.

High-Pass Filter

Each preamp section includes a high-pass filter that reduces subsonic noise below 80 Hz, effectively minimising unwanted low-frequency disturbances. This feature can be applied to both the microphone and instrument inputs, enhancing the clarity of recordings.

48V Phantom Power

Both preamplifiers feature a 48V phantom power switch, enabling the use of condenser microphones. Activating phantom power provides the required 48 volts to operate these microphones effectively.

Phase Reverse Function

The phase reverse function allows users to invert the signal polarity by 180 degrees. This capability helps resolve phase issues during recording and ensures a coherent sound when combining multiple audio sources.

Flair and Contour EQ Presets

The Pre One incorporates two analogue EQ presets, Flair and Contour, to refine sound further. Activating Flair enhances the signal with a silky high-frequency range, delivering smooth and detailed highs. Contour, on the other hand, integrates the signal seamlessly into a mix, retaining natural presence while achieving a compact and balanced tonal quality.

PAD Switches

The rear panel of the Pre One houses PAD switches for each preamp section. These switches attenuate the microphone input signal by 20 dB, accommodating high-level sources such as percussion or brass instruments without distortion.

Mic and Instrument Inputs

The Pre One offers two microphone inputs with Neutrik XLR connectors and gold-plated contacts, ensuring reliable signal transmission at a nominal level of +0 dBu. Additionally, the second preamplifier features an ultra-low-noise Hi-Z instrument input. When an instrument connects to this input, the corresponding mic input automatically deactivates, ensuring seamless operation.

Line Outputs

Each preamp includes a separate balanced TRS line output. These outputs provide compatibility with various audio interfaces, ensuring optimal connectivity and signal integrity during recording and monitoring.

Professional Power Supply

The Pre One’s power supply lays the foundation for its superior performance. While it uses a 12V plug-in power unit, the internal secondary power supply generates a voltage of ±17 volts for the analogue audio sections. This design allows professional levels of up to +22.5 dB. The low-drop voltage regulation ensures clean and consistent operation even at maximum load.
