KEY FEATURES
The Twisted Electrons Blast Beats is a 10-voice hybrid FM drum machine and synthesizer that combines the vintage Yamaha OPL3 (YMF262) sound chip with six drum tracks, four melodic synth tracks, a 64-step sequencer, 56 hands-on faders and extensive performance modulation for retro-inspired electronic music production.
Classic OPL3 Sound with Modern Control
The Blast Beats takes its distinctive sound from the Yamaha YMF262 OPL3 FM synthesis chip, which powered Sound Blaster audio cards during the MS-DOS era. This chip produces the gritty, metallic and harmonically complex tones associated with classic computer games and early chiptune music.
Twisted Electrons expands the chip's creative potential with eight selectable waveforms, multiple synthesis algorithms and detailed parameter controls. Musicians can develop everything from punchy electronic percussion and distorted bass lines to evolving textures, experimental sequences and intricate melodic arrangements.
Six Drum Voices and Four Synth Tracks
Blast Beats combines six dedicated percussion tracks with four melodic synthesizer tracks. The drum section covers bass drum, snare, tom, closed hi-hat, open hi-hat and cymbal, providing a complete rhythmic foundation.
Each drum voice offers sound-shaping controls, including envelope adjustments that influence attack, decay, sustain and release characteristics. The bass drum features additional editing depth for precise low-frequency design.
The four synth tracks extend the instrument beyond conventional drum machine functionality. Synth tracks 1 and 2 operate monophonically, while tracks 3 and 4 offer duophonic configurations. Synth 3 alternates between two voices to create overlapping notes, whereas Synth 4 triggers both voices simultaneously for thicker bass sounds and layered melodic textures.
Flexible 64-Step Sequencer
The integrated sequencer supports patterns of up to 64 steps, with adjustable pattern lengths for conventional and unconventional rhythmic structures.
Two operating modes provide different approaches to composition. Kit/Patt mode supports live jamming and rapid selection of kits and patterns, while Step mode offers traditional step-sequencing control for detailed programming.
Blast Beats includes 100 kits and supports storage of up to 160 songs. Its integrated SD card also allows musicians to manage and share kits and patterns.
Hands-On Sound Design and Fader Automation
The front panel features 56 faders and 32 illuminated switches, giving musicians immediate access to synthesis parameters, sequencing functions and performance controls.
Fader automation allows users to record parameter movements directly into sequences, creating evolving timbres and rhythmic variations without external automation equipment.
The FM engine responds dramatically to subtle parameter changes, making the extensive fader layout particularly useful for experimental sound design and expressive live performance.
Probability, Wiggle and Performance Tricks
Blast Beats provides several creative tools for introducing movement, unpredictability and variation.
Probability controls the likelihood of individual steps triggering on each sequencer pass, helping musicians create evolving rhythms and less repetitive patterns.
The Wiggle function generates randomised parameter movement within adjustable ranges, introducing organic variation to drum sounds and synthesizer textures.
Three additional performance functions offer more dramatic transformations. Stutter retriggers sequences at adjustable subdivisions, Bend lowers the global FM tuning to produce tape-stop-style effects, and Freeze interrupts communication within the synthesis engine to generate unpredictable digital glitches.
Musicians can record these performance effects into the sequencer and incorporate them into repeatable arrangements.
MIDI Connectivity and Flexible Audio Routing
Blast Beats integrates with hardware synthesizers, drum machines, MIDI controllers and recording systems through five-pin DIN MIDI input and output connections.
All ten instruments support internal sequencing or external MIDI control. The FM engine also supports operation as a four-operator, eight-waveform polytimbral MIDI synthesizer.
Four assignable 6.35mm audio outputs allow musicians to route individual instruments to external mixers, effects processors or recording interfaces. Each output includes independent volume control.
Analogue synchronisation inputs and outputs use 3.5mm connections, allowing Blast Beats to synchronise with compatible hardware sequencers and drum machines. A dedicated headphone connection supports direct monitoring.
Compact Aluminium Construction
Blast Beats features an anodised aluminium chassis designed for studio and live use. Its compact dimensions of 29.5 x 16.5 x 4.5cm and weight of 944g make it suitable for portable electronic music setups.
The instrument includes a 9V DC power supply and combines its extensive controls with a relatively small desktop footprint.
