The Twisted Electrons TWISTfm is an eight-voice hybrid FM synthesiser with dual Yamaha YMF262 OPL3 chips, eight analogue multimode filters, four-operator and two-operator synthesis layers, MPE support, ribbon control, a 128-step sequencer and firmware 3.2 looping envelopes.
Classic OPL3 FM with Analogue Filtering
TWISTfm combines the distinctive digital character of vintage Yamaha OPL3 chips with dedicated analogue filtering for every voice. Its four-operator and two-operator layers create sounds ranging from glassy electric pianos and metallic percussion to dense basses, layered chords and evolving pads. Front-panel faders provide direct access to synthesis parameters, making complex FM programming more immediate.
Each voice has an analogue multimode filter with 15 responses, including low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, notch and phaser options. Heat adds analogue drive, while Liquid and MS20 resonance settings offer smooth or more aggressive responses. External audio inputs also allow TWISTfm to process other instruments through filters seven and eight.
Firmware 3.2 and Evolving Modulation
Firmware 3.2 extends the original synthesis architecture with looping envelopes that repeatedly reshape operator levels. These repeating contours introduce rhythmic pulses, gradual harmonic changes and sustained movement within a patch.
LFOs and modulation envelopes add further animation, while vibrato varies pitch and tremolo varies level. Together, these tools support subtle movement, intricate modulation and more experimental textures.
Expressive Performance and Pattern Creation
MPE and polyphonic aftertouch support allow compatible controllers to shape individual notes independently. The ribbon provides tactile control for expressive gestures, while preset morphing creates transitions between sound states. Preset memory stores patches for repeatable studio and live use.
The 128-step sequencer develops extended phrases, and the arpeggiator turns held notes into repeating patterns. Chord and scale settings provide further control over harmonic structure.
Browser Editing and MIDI Integration
The browser editor brings MIDI configuration, operator settings, envelopes, LFOs, ribbon response and sequencing into a larger visual workspace. It also provides access to arpeggiator, chord, scale, vibrato and tremolo parameters without requiring a dedicated desktop application.
USB MIDI and DIN MIDI connect TWISTfm to computer-based and hardware setups. External audio inputs expand its role beyond synthesis, allowing its analogue filters to add movement and character to incoming signals.
