UDO DMNO ON

The UDO DMNO ON is an eight-voice, two-part multitimbral desktop hybrid synthesiser with two independent synth engines, FPGA digital oscillators, Dynamic Multi-Core Stereo analogue filters, eight Play Modes, onboard DSP effects and a 24-bit USB audio interface.

Dual Hybrid Synth Engines

DMNO ON brings the dual-engine architecture of the keyboard DMNO into a compact desktop instrument with a streamlined single control set. Its two independent synthesis engines, DMNO 1 and DMNO 2, each provide a complete timbral layer with dedicated oscillators, filters, modulation and effects.

Each engine combines two ultra-high-sample-rate, high-resolution FPGA digital oscillators with a stereo analogue filter architecture. This hybrid design supplies clear, alias-free sound sources alongside analogue warmth, supporting everything from detailed basses and expansive pads to complex, overdriven textures.

Binaural Synthesis and Two-Part Multitimbrality

DMNO ON offers eight conventional voices or four ‘super’ voices in Binaural mode. Each binaural voice pairs two complete synthesiser signal paths, allocating one to the left channel and one to the right. Independent detuning, phase offsets and modulation of oscillator, filter and amplitude parameters create movement, stereo width and a greater sense of spatial depth.

Two-part multitimbrality allows both engines to produce different sounds simultaneously. Keyboard splits place separate timbres across different playing ranges, while layers combine both sounds for richer performances.

Eight Play Modes

Eight selectable Play Modes change the relationship between the two engines through a single control. Single plays the selected DMNO engine, Dual plays both simultaneously, and Split divides the keyboard between DMNO 1 and DMNO 2.

One-Two assigns the first key press to DMNO 1 and subsequent presses to DMNO 2. Rotate alternates between the engines, while Random chooses either engine at random. Chaos combines random engine selection with curated note randomisation. Cascade routes DMNO 1’s audio output into DMNO 2’s oscillator mixer, allowing the first engine to act as a complex oscillator source for the second.

Dynamic Multi-Core Stereo Analogue Filters

The per-voice Dynamic Multi-Core Stereo VCF system uses a reconfigurable voltage-controlled topology to extend the instrument’s tonal range. Filter pairs offer series, parallel and stereo configurations, with multiple filter modes available for each connection type.

Series operation allows successive filtering, parallel operation combines separate filter responses, and stereo operation supports independent processing across the stereo field. These configurations cover familiar filter shapes alongside more experimental responses, delivering warm analogue tones and assertive sound design textures.

Expandable ON System Control

The base unit retains the complete eight-voice, two-part synthesis engine within its compact desktop format. Optional ONM modules add dedicated physical controls to suit different performance and studio workflows.

The ONM-1 Synth Control recreates the keyboard DMNO’s dual control layout, while the ONM-2 Effects Control provides direct access to the onboard effects engines. DMNO ON supports up to two different expansion modules, with screw-locking D-Sub connections providing plug-and-play operation without additional power supplies. UDO plans further ONM modules to extend the system.

Studio Audio, USB and CV Connectivity

The integrated 24-bit, class-compliant USB audio interface provides two input and two output channels for direct computer and DAW integration.

A stereo external audio input includes a variable-gain preamplifier, gate level detector and envelope follower. These facilities allow incoming audio to generate gate signals and supply modulation information through the modulation matrix, connecting external sound sources with the instrument’s synthesis architecture.

The assignable stereo auxiliary output can carry DMNO 1, DMNO 2, USB audio from a connected host or the effects send bus. Two individual user-assignable CV and gate/clock outputs use 3.5 mm sockets to connect with compatible analogue equipment.

High-Resolution Effects and VFD Display

A 32-bit DSP effects chain provides delay, reverb, EQ, overdrive distortion and chorus. These processors support subtle enhancement, spacious textures, tonal shaping and more extreme treatments.

The high-contrast electroluminescent glass vacuum fluorescent display combines an ultra-wide viewing angle with dedicated rotary controls. It provides access to patch and performance management, instrument voicing, filter settings, effects and the onboard sequencer. Shallow menus and limited hidden controls keep sound editing immediate.
