Universal Audio Volt 4 Gen 2

The Universal Audio Volt 4 Gen 2 is a 12-in / 6-out USB audio interface with 32-bit / 192 kHz conversion, two Tone Shaping Preamps, four analogue inputs, ADAT expansion, MIDI I/O, a full-colour Smart Display, Auto-Gain, Clip Protection and bundled recording software for Mac, Windows, iPad and iPhone.

Universal Audio Recording Quality with Expanded Control

The Volt 4 Gen 2 combines Volt’s accessible recording workflow, analogue preamp character and portable design with expanded connectivity and hands-on recording controls. Developed by the team behind Universal Audio’s Apollo interfaces, it supports vocal, instrument and stereo recording, alongside podcasting, livestreaming and music production.

Two Tone Shaping Preamps

Two microphone preamps provide up to 60 dB of digitally controlled gain. Three character modes, Warmth, Focus and Shine, introduce tube, solid-state and British Class-A tonal flavours at the recording stage. These options help shape vocals and instruments before mixing.

Independent 48V phantom power on each microphone channel supports condenser microphones, while front-panel Hi-Z inputs accommodate electric guitars and basses. Mic / line inputs on channels 1 and 2 and additional line inputs on channels 3 and 4 provide four analogue input channels for microphones, instruments, synthesisers and outboard equipment.

32-Bit / 192 kHz Conversion and Flexible Monitoring

The Volt 4 Gen 2 supports 32-bit conversion at sample rates from 44.1 to 192 kHz. Its microphone inputs deliver 118 dB A-weighted dynamic range, while the line inputs reach 119 dB and the instrument inputs reach 116 dB.

A stereo monitor output, additional line outputs 3 and 4, and a stereo headphone output provide six output channels. Monitor and line outputs offer 126 dB A-weighted dynamic range and a maximum output level of 20.2 dBu. Balanced, DC-coupled line outputs support compatible studio connections, while the headphone output supplies one stereo cue mix for recording and playback.

ADAT Expansion and MIDI Connectivity

The optical input accepts ADAT or S/PDIF, allowing the interface to accommodate additional digital sources. ADAT adds up to eight input channels at 44.1 or 48 kHz, four at 88.2 or 96 kHz, and two at 176.4 or 192 kHz through S/MUX. S/PDIF supports two input channels across all supported sample rates.

MIDI In and Out use ⅛-inch TRS Type A connections for compatible keyboards, controllers, synthesisers and drum machines. An onboard USB hub connects peripherals and supplies up to 5V DC at 0.5A for compatible devices, including external MIDI controllers.

Smart Display, Auto-Gain and Clip Protection

The full-colour Smart Display presents input channels, signal levels and settings with clear visual feedback. It helps streamline channel selection and level adjustments during recording.

Auto-Gain establishes recording levels in seconds, while Clip Protection helps manage unexpected signal peaks. Together, these features reduce manual setup and help protect takes from digital clipping.

UAD Console Integration and Loopback

Integration with the UAD Console app and LUNA supports session recall and low-latency cue mixes. This allows recording setups to retain their settings and gives performers a practical monitoring workflow.

Built-in loopback combines live inputs with computer audio for podcasts, livestreams, video calls and content creation. It allows software playback and connected microphones or instruments to share a recording or streaming feed.

Portable USB Connectivity

USB bus power supports mobile recording without a separate power supply when the connected device provides sufficient power. USB Type-C connectors serve the USB 2.0 host connection, peripheral hub and dedicated external power input. The external power input requires a minimum 5V DC supply at 1A.

The interface works with Mac, Windows, iPad and iPhone, and supports major DAWs including Ableton Live, FL Studio, GarageBand, Logic Pro and Pro Tools. Windows operation requires the ASIO driver available through UA Connect. Lightning-equipped Apple devices require an Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter, and bus-power requirements vary with the connected device.

A rugged enclosure supports regular studio and mobile use, while a rear-panel power switch provides direct control over operation.
