The ZON PEBX is a 3-band parametric equaliser with integrated gain control, designed for API 500 series compatibility, delivering wide, musical tone shaping alongside the harmonic saturation associated with classic 'BX' circuits.
Overview
ZON has engineered the PEBX by drawing inspiration from the iconic EQ designs of early Portastudio and M-series mixers, well-regarded for their smooth, musical response in recording and production workflows. The addition of a gain stage, based on the renowned 'BX' mixer topology, brings familiar analogue crunch, harmonic richness and a distinctive squish and ring when pushed, making it an ideal pairing for drum machines like the 808, acid bass lines or any source requiring vintage character and aggressive tonal shaping.
Parametric EQ and Gain Structure
The PEBX provides a fixed high-frequency EQ centred at 10kHz with ±12dB of boost or cut, allowing precise control over sheen, clarity and air. Two fully sweepable bands handle the mid and low frequencies. The mid band ranges from 1kHz to 8kHz, enabling detailed shaping of presence, attack and upper harmonics, while the low band covers 60Hz to 1.5kHz, offering control over warmth, body and low-end punch.
The input gain stage operates from unity to +20dB, introducing smooth saturation and distortion at higher settings. A dedicated output level attenuation control allows for precise source matching and prevents unwanted signal overload within the chain.
Utility Features
The unit incorporates a latching bypass switch with LED indication for immediate A/B comparison and workflow transparency. A clip LED warns of excessive levels, ensuring controlled operation even under aggressive gain settings.
Designed and built in the UK, the PEBX combines musical EQ curves, classic analogue gain character and rugged 500 series compatibility, delivering authentic '90s sonic flavour to modern production environments.
